Topic: Bloody Drupal! Need a fast, secure CMS...

...that doesn't take a degree in computer science to install and run. I was very impressed with what the Firefox team did with Drupal on spreadfirefox.com. But trying to install the latest version was far to complicated for me and using it is even worse.

I want to convert this section of my site to CMS www.firefusion.org/lue (I know it looks bad at the mo i've been waiting to use CMS before I change it).

I'm looking for something that's no harder to customise and run than PunBB.

UPDATE: I found Textpattern. And i'm loving it.

wow! this is really nice! It has a user groups system... if that may be integrated with punBB 1.2, it'll be great! It seems they still don't have a working forums... mmm...

Re: Bloody Drupal! Need a fast, secure CMS...

no they dont, and they have a lot of bugs in it too, i might go make a user system for my CMS and see if i can intergrated it with punbb

Re: Bloody Drupal! Need a fast, secure CMS...

Seems a lot of people working on their own...my attempt: http://www.phpmywebthing.com

I was able to hack in punBB without to much work, http://www.phpmywebthing.com/addons/punBB/ but not very efficient in the end....thinking may be time to try to write my own (even minimum would be good if good integration)

http://nucleuscms.org looks pretty sweet

Re: Bloody Drupal! Need a fast, secure CMS...

Why is it "hard to install?". Drupal is  not "hard"to install *at all*.
Drupal forces you to know a bit about what you re doing, yes. but "hard, no!. It indeed is not an office suit that you are going to install by inserting it into the CDromdive. ITs is a webapplication, so indeed it requires you to at least know about what you are doing!

I would say: give it a go anyway, you will not find it hard, once you have gone trought the first learning curve.

Well, [ Queries: 11 ]  [ Execution Time: 0.1096 ] is about the best I can do right now. I have some big theme styles and language files for convenience, need to do some trimming. I don't do any compression, or caching, things to work on.

Although an IB Forums comes in .100+

It may be awhile...doing a lot of traveling until feb or so... but I do get to work on it evenings from the hotel... But will be spring probably until a beta. Plus after going through the phpCOIN dev for 2 years, kind of got a taste of how crazy it can get. May just offer to those interested.

Re: Bloody Drupal! Need a fast, secure CMS...

Being a newuser/admin of Drupal I would say a few things.
Like any new system of the size and complexity of Drupal there is a learning curve. The way Drupal is built uses good design principles and the system is built on the concept of nodes (be it a forum node, a page node or book node etc.) - some may prefer another approach but this is the way Drupal works.
It works well; as a system designed to be set up by web designers/admins (not users).
It has a very active community, the support is second to  none for an opensource community effort (response normally within an hour in my experience!).

Weaknesses in my humble opinion are:

- Not enough focus on the individual (i.e. user). A community oriented system should centre on the individual, not the content; on the other hand, this was designed as a cms, not a community system, so that being said the latest release goes a loooong way towards a community goal - the will appears to be there
- The terminology has been (and still can be) the hardest learning curve. That being said I had it installed within an hour of downloading it having never implemented a cms before - piece of cake really.
- Configuring was tricky (not so much the doing, but understanding how to), but in the latest version (Sept) this has been addressed 100 fold (with lots more integrated hints etc., ....and so has it seems (at last) the drupal.org web site with a face lift.
- Documentation is pretty good, but misses some things - where it lacks the forum usually has it.

Summary - for a system that can be molded for so many different uses it is very stable and in my book very user friendly. It only lacks the marketting machine.

That's pretty much the case for the majority of CMS's out there.

Good code, needs a good push into the limelight.
