Topic: Auto linking!

Not a mod but a quick and easy way to have auto linking on your forums.

Use the swaer filter/Censor function! Administration > Censoring
Censor words must be enabled in Options for this to have any effect.

Censored word: Google
Replacement text: use bbcode  [url=http://www.google.com]Google[/url ]  <- less space

now each time someone posts the word Google it comes up as a link Google. play with it. big_smile

Re: Auto linking!

Interesting? I haven't used censoring; How would that handle, say, "Googlebot"?

? i'm confused... it would handle it however you decide to have the censor handle it.

edit: ok i get it... 1 sec i'll test....

Re: Auto linking!

ok. i'll just quote the directions:

Enter a word that you want to censor and the replacement text for this word. Wildcards are accepted (i.e. *some* would match somewhere and lonesome). Censor words also affect usernames. New users will not be able to register with usernames containing any censored words. The search is case insensitive. Censor words must be enabled in Options for this to have any effect.

so in my example googlebot would be left along but if the censored word was google* or *google* then googlebot would be replaced with the link.

Re: Auto linking!

what if someone posts:

[url=http://www.google.com]Google[/url]

then i would guess it makes it

[url=http://www.google.com][url=http://www.google.com]Google[/url][/url]

which is not desireable.

a regex check would need to be done checking for ] and [ etc on either side of the word.

Re: Auto linking!

i just tested it and it pops out:

[url=http://www.google.com]google[/url]

and both words google are linked correctly but there is the extra raw bbcode.

it's not perfect but a quick a dirty way of minor auto linking. it obviously will need to be used on words that aren't linked normally i guess.

*shrug*

Re: Auto linking!

This is a great idea!  The only problem I discovered is that if someone uses Google in the subject of their post it puts the whole bbcode in the post title / subject.

A lot of people abreviate my site as BYC in the forum and it would be soooooo cool to link all those to the site.  Too bad that when I just tried it, about 15 titles blew up.

Re: Auto linking!

yeah, it's way far from a real autolink hack/mod. i'm sure someone will develop one for 1.3.

Re: Auto linking!

cool. one thing though that it may warrant developing it into a seperate mod is that someone who types info like "Google Finance", "Google Checkout", "Google News", "Google Checkout" etc etc will only have Google linked while of course the remaining part of the name would be not linked. a sort of inlcusions, exclusions list to this that one makes manually may fix this.

Re: Auto linking!

i can almost guarantee there will be an extension to handle this function on it's own. at least i hope there will be. wink

Re: Auto linking!

Any new thoughts on how to enable this without messing up thread titles?    I think this has a TON of potential to cross link popular words in each of my forum to content pages on my sites or to other forum threads.
