I like that enclosure a bunch. I also like the mobile racks.  It would be great to find a case that small that already has the necessities in it... like a mb, video card, nic, etc... I really want the box to be self-contained, quiet, and reliable.  I will also support the NAS with a high quality Battery Backup.

I'm putting those mobile racks on my short list.  Thanks for the suggestion!

I am planning on using sata drives.  I don't think I will use SCSI.  Quiet is a big priority and I don't think SCSI is a necessity on this.

I love the pool of knowledge that is contained in the craniums of the frequenters of this place called PunBB...  so here goes my question... with a few comments.

Does anyone have any good tips they can offer for someone building a NAS for their home?

Here are my thoughts so far... but I want to cover the bases that I haven't thought of.

I had been considering purchasing a NAS for sometime.  I was leaning toward the Buffalo TeraStation.  I changed my mind.

I don't just want storage... I want some redundancy too.  So I am thinking of mimicking the TeraStation default setup of Raid 5.  Since hard drives in the 250 - 300gb range are so inexpensive... I'll probably stay in that range.

I want the machine to be as quiet as possible.

So I have considered going with a antec 180p and putting in some noise dampening foam where I can.

However, I have also thought it would be nice to have some hot-swappable drives so I didn't need to turn the thing off.  This is an area I have almost no experience in.  I'm used to seeing hot-swappable stuff in servers... I have yet to see any in a home based pc.... although I'm sure there out there... I just haven't seen any.

The software I want to go with is FreeNAS found at http://www.freenas.org/

At the same time I build my NAS server I am also going to redo my home network and make it wired only for security and speed reasons and I will shoot for Gigabit speeds.

Anyway... any tips anyone can offer is greatly appreciated.  What am I missing and what advice might you give on this?

Thanks in advance.

Excellent decision.  Probably not an easy one to make... but nevertheless a good one.

Congratulations Team!

I am looking for a good web based mailing list software.  Emphasis is on simple and clean.  I don't want anything to bloated.  Everything I am finding is too over-the-top.  I figured the users in this forum would probably be some of the best people to ask... since we all love the purity of pun.

Thanks for any help on this one!

Thanks again for all your hard work Rickard.  Your humility actually benefits this project very much. Many programmers would not have gone to any length to research further a problem like you did... and then admit so publicly that they were wrong. Keep up the good work!

Oh... and one more thing.  A moron would never admit to his mistakes.

Mark Topics as Read mod adds a link to mark forums as read when viewing the forums :-/

Sweet!

This is exactly what I needed! Thanks a bunch!

I know Pun gives me the option to mark all forums as read.  I would like the option to mark individual forums as read.  Is this possible.

I have looked into the 'Mark Topics as Read' Mod, but it seems to only work once you visit the individual threads inside a forum.  It, evidently, does not give you the option to click a link and mark an entire forum as read. I have also looked at the 'Last Read' Mod, but again it appears to not offer this functionality.

Does anyone have any suggestions on this?

Thanks in advance!

The converter was not saving session info out and PunBB requires session info for nearly everything.  Once that was working, we were able to do the coversion.

PunBB works fine - the converter didn't - until we added a session_save_path to the top of index.php in the migration directory before the session_start() call.

The migration went extemely well.  Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions!

These are the error were having.

After the initial installation of Pun which appeared to go well, I installed the converter and hit it via my browser. The converter gave a generic no database selected error from MySQL when attempting to connect to the database. I did some debugging and all parameters were passed correctly to the connection function. It simply did not recognize the script was connected. I was going to attempt a IPB 1.2 to Pun conversion (I know the converter is for 1.3) but never got that far as the db wouldn't connect for the converter.

I am looking for some help on a forum conversion for an ecommerce support forum that I am involved with.

We are interested in using PunBB for our support forums since it appears to be the best compliant forum available.  Currently we are using Invision 1.2 and would like to upgrade to Pun.

However, the converter does not seem to work for us.  I noticed that the converter has not been updated for sometime...   Can anyone verify that the converter works for IPB 1.2?

We have a huge forum with thousands of users and tens of thousands of posts.

Is this conversion doable?

Thanks for any insight on this.

I just sent both of you an invite.

I'll need your email.  Just click on my email link under the R2 pic and shoot me your email.  Newsvine requires that I send it to an email address.

I have Itunes on a Windows machine that I use primarily for testing.  Its feel clunky on Windows.  When you click a button... it seems like the application is trying to decide what to do.  Its not snappy and fast but slow and methodical.  Another problem I have with Itunes is the navigation.  It doesn't feel natural.  Admittedly, I have yet to find a podcast/media player that I really like.  I don't think the killer app for this segment of the software world has been created yet.

Maybe later versions of Songbird can fill this void... but its still too early to tell.

My mistake.  Your right, it is based on Firefox but not by Mozilla.  Thanks for catching that.  The app looks promising.

Mozilla has released a technology preview of Songbird, an application that functions much the same as ITunes. It allows you to organize your music, connect to music stores, play music, etc...

You can download it at

http://www.songbirdnest.com/

If the site is overloaded... you can find a torrent I'm hosting for the next day or two at the link below.

Songbird Torrent

It should be in your mailbox now.

Hello Elzar,

If you could use my email link and send me your email address, I can shoot you an invite over.

Your welcome.  Its pretty cool.  I have more available if anyone is interested. Just use my email link to the left.

I thought some of my friends around here might want to get in on the private newsvine beta. If your interested, shoot me an email or reply here. I have a limited number of invites... so its first come, first serve.
