When my forum started to get hit by automated spam bots I quickly made a small modification to the sign-up page as you need to be registered to post.
Now when bots try to register they always fail and it gets logged to my apache's error.log, normal users are not having any problems.

It is a simple extra form where it asks a simple math sum, and you need to enter the correct answer. (I based it on the "Did you Pass Math" mod for Wordpress, but I used server-side openssl for challenge/response)

You can have a look at: http://www.savvy.nl/blog/forum/register.php and check if you can write an automated script to register an account.
Actually it's not that hard if you evaluate the form question.. but hey it works, i got ZERO spam smile

If anyone is interested in the mod, PM/email me. I'm not making this public as it will increase the chance that bot coders will pick it up and write something for it.

Would be nice if you posted the mod.
And it would be ALOT better with a image generator that said "what is 4 plus 5?" so that parsers can´t read it.

Edit:
like this: http://www.hetemeel.com/einsteinform.php

Iv got about 1000 users that never made a post... Just lurking around.

Offtopic..
Btw, how do you guys get the "[ Generated in 0.316 seconds, 10 queries executed ]"?
is it a mod?

Sub Forum Mod v.1.0.5

         History:
                    Fixed by Timpa
                      in version 1.0.5
                       - Correctly sorting subforums
                       - Now showing last post as it should
                    Fixed by NeoTall (Rus):
                      in version 1.0.4
                       - Fixed items in combobox "Select where to search"
                      in version 1.0.3
                       - Fixed search in SubForum when using "Non-MultiByted" language
                      in version 1.0.2
                       - Correctly displaying Last Post, Last Poster and Last Posted Time
                       - Correctly displaying Total Topics and Total Posts
                      in version 1.0.1
                       - Correctly creating Last Post link
                       - Correctly displaying word "Topics" on SubForum header

I suggest a sorting style like this:

Parent forum 1   [disp_position=100]
  Child forum 1   [disp_position=101]
  Child forum 2   [disp_position=102]
  Child forum 3   [disp_position=103]
  Child forum 4   [disp_position=104]
Parent forum 2   [disp_position=200]
  Child forum 1   [disp_position=201]
  Child forum 2   [disp_position=202]
  Child forum 3   [disp_position=203]
  Child forum 4   [disp_position=204]

Makes a easy overview...

Is there a working link to this mod in action somewhere?

Also, has anyone gotten it to work, specifically with 1.2.14?

Ye. A working version for 1.2.14 without the need to apply 392847923874 rows of random code written in this forum.
It would be rely nice....

Dunno if it is a bug or something, getting this message when I try to make a poll sticky:

No input file specified.

Useing: PunBB 1.2.10

När blir moden klar?!?! Vill verkligen ha den nu.
Kommer man kunna sätta maximala filstorleken på olika filtyper.
T.ex. man kanske vill att bilder inte får vara större än 200k men en rar fil får vara 2mb

... perhaps not that much ... but this is from the Admin page (showing the size of the sql tables) ... and I think I might be in the lead there wink

Rows: 74701
Size: 90.96 MB

but put it up during the summer(middle of july), and isn't open to the public ... yet smile

Edit: Well so far I think I've got the biggest database at least (defenetly not most posts though)

Rows: 103820
Size: 121.75 MB

Guess people will catch this pretty fast when I now have released the attachment mod big_smile

Let us see the forum then.. link?

Hmm.
