Sorry, what do you mean?

Well, it hasn't worked with my old database, I received the following error:

"#1170 - BLOB/TEXT column 'message' used in key specification without a key length"

It seems that some of the database has been restored though - my index page shows my 2 old forums, with post counts displayed, but there are in fact no posts within those forums. Also, my userlist has not been restored (although there are usernames shown as having posted on the index page).

Basically, it appears to be well and truly broken.

Help, somebody please, help!

ps any ideas why the plugin can't handle it?

I am unable to restore from a backup that was done using the DB Management plugin. I did a full backup with no gzip compression, giving me a  .sql file.  When uploading this file, I get the following error message:

"No file was uploaed or the upload failed, the database was not restored"

Here's my setup:
  PunBB 1.2.5
  Operating system: FreeBSD
  PHP: 5.0.4
  MySQL 4.1.10a-log
  Rows: 87
  Size: 1.64 MB
  Using Database management - v1.3.

I have moved host (am now on textdrive) and my forum is in limbo at the moment as I can't restore the db.

I have re-tried the restore and backup with a fresh punbb install, but I still can't get the restore to work.

???????

The way I have done it is to create a htaccess.txt file (in notepad) and then ftp it to my server. My ftp software (filezilla) allows me to rename the file on the server to .htaccess.

Hope this helps....

Many thanks to Rickard for PunBB, it''s exactly what I was looking for when I wanted rid of PHPBB. Pun has been pretty easy to integrate into the site design, and feedback from users has been very positive - they find it easier to use and quicker than PHPBB.

I'm intending to use the PunBB login system to add interactivity to other areas of the site, but for now I am very happy with the forum.

OK, so now I am confused.......  I have just been back to my forum and now I can log in as different users, do admin, do basically anything that I couldn't do last night..... huh?

Well I just hope it stays this way.

I kept cleaning my local cache last night as I thought it was something to do with cookies, but it had no effect. Today,  having done nothing differently, all appears to be well.

I checked my cookies and they are being written as expected.

Any ideas what has been going on?

Yes, I was 99% certain that it wsa nothing to do with the css or tpl files, but you never know, so I just thought I'd try going back to the original set-up.

Do you mean the cache on my computer, or the php files in the cache drectory of the forum?

I think you mean on the computer. Will check this and the config file, thanks.  I tried clearing out the cache php files from the forum but this had no effect.

I have just run the PunBB Migration Tool to take my site away from PHBB.

I'd like to explain, in stages, what problems I've had, what I did to try to fix them, and where I'm at now:

1.  After conversion, all looked fine - all users and posts were brought over.

2. When logged in as Site Admin, I tried to go to the "Administration" area but was denied access and automatically logged out.

3. I went into PHPMyadmin and changed the group_id for the Site Admin user to "1" (it was set to "4").

4. I logged into the forum as Site Admin again, and everything seemed fine. I was able to do administration and also to use the forum as a user (I also logged in as a normal user).

5. I have been modifying the CSS and main.tpl files All I have done is enclose the forum in a container div which sits in my site layout.  Since doing this, I have a login/logout problem.  I can login, but as soon as I go to any page within the forum, I am automatically logged out. This is the case for a normal user login and also a Site Admin login.

So, that is where I am at - unable to stay logged in and unable to do any administration.  I have just checked the database, and the Site Admin user group_id is still set to "1".  Also, I have tried reverting to the original CSS and main.tpl files but I have the same problem with these.

I've just noticed that the tool is for PunBB 1.2.1, whereas I went to 1.2.5 - does anyone know if that might be the root of my problem?

On the question of security, this might be a naive question but is there an inherent problem with the technology used by forums in general? Is there anything more secure than using PHP and SQL to do this kind of thing? It is just annoying (for users, of course, but surely for developers too) to have to constantly release patches to fix security holes.

I can't claim to know what I am talking about as I have never done anything more than plain old html and css, so I'm asking the experts out there - are security patch upgrades to forums (certainly not restricted to punbb) just a fact of life? Or are we all missing something?

Pre-empting some answers to this post, I guess you could say you get what you pay for - if you want total security then pay for a system that has a team of security testers working day and night....which will probably also be a horrile mess of tables and images everywhere....

I'm really not having a dig at punbb, which I love, I just wondered what the general feeling is on this point?

That's pretty much what a title attribute does

Can title attributes be added to the standard liks within Punbb?

This would be especially useful for the main links in the board header. For example, if the PunBB is integrated into another page, how does the user know that "Index" will take them to the forum index and not the site index? A title attribute would help here...

I'd like to customise the fields that users fill in for their Profile. I'd also like to customise which items from the Profile appear next to the user's name when they post (currently their registration date, number of posts, email and web address).

Can anyone give me a pointer to where to start changing this stuff? I haven't done any mods before.

Cheers,

marv

The index page just doesn't load. This can go on for maybe 10 minutes or a couple of hours, then it all magically comes back to life and works fine.

I've never experienced it with the PunBB forum so I guess it must be my host - I'm just not sure what to tell them. My static pages always load, it's only the punBB forum that sometimes fails, hence my question about having a slow database on an otherwise speedy host.

Well, whatever the cause, I've just signed up for Textdrive so hopefully all will be sorted...

I'm not hosted on textdrive, so that downtime wasn't the cause of my problems. My punbb forum is very unreliable, but I have not tried any other forum on the same host. All I know is that static pages always respond, wheras punbb seems to be about 10% unavailable. I'm not saying it's a punbb problem, but I wonder what it could be? Can you have a slow MySQL database on an otherwise speedy host? I have asked my host about this and they just said there are no server performance issues.

Any ideas anyone?

Didn't know that about the 10px thing in Gecko, thanks. Do you know any more details on this - why is it better?

Cheers

I'm customizing my css to make all the font sizes relative (em rather than px). I wondered :

1. Was a reason for making the size fixed in the first place?
2. Could we have an alternative stylesheet with font sizes in em for a 1.2.x release?

Perhaps an alternate print stylesheet would be nice too - is anyone working on this?

I've also had trouble getting onto textdrive.com today - connected possibly?

hmmmm.......  I get this on my PunBB forum too, but I thought it was just the server that was slow. Static pages load up just fine though, so what else could it be?
