Is there an option to only allow view of the forum if your a registered member?

Uhm, yes. Remove "Read" rights for guests.

Any technology distinguishable from magic, is insufficiently advanced.

you can turn off the entire forum for guests in the Usergroups section of admin or you can change settings per forum in the Forums section by pressing edit next to the forum you wish to change

can this be done in 1.1.5?

i'm just starting out with punbb and haven't upgraded yet but see no way to do it in 1.15 unless the user is an admin/moderator.

figured as much but i won't be upgrading to there's a pm system release for 1.2.
