it make it harder for people to log into other peoples accounts with there username. the LoginName is not shown any were apart from in the database. its like security smile

I like this idea, very nice.

However, my question is about installation in a pre existing community. Once installed, wouldn't this render all existing accounts unloginable? If the login and username can not be the same, what happens to the existing users?

Perhaps, the login could be, by default, the current username, and it could be changed later..

I would use for integrating to a CMS or something.
In my example, I have integrated dokuwiki with punbb, and some users have strange usernames. I can use this new field and force users to have a alphanumeric username.
Maybe in the future, this username can be used to have an email too.
