Why it is renamed?

Re: New Firebird Release

Firebird is a trademark by some car company, could be that...

Re: New Firebird Release

Firebird is also the name of the open source version of Interbase and they used the name first. The situation was getting a bit confusing.

Firefox FAQ wrote:

Why change the name?

To avoid overlap. The colloquial name "Firebird" is also in use by another open source project. While we don't believe our use of the Firebird name infringed on their trademark, we wanted to be responsive to the concerns of fellow open source developers.

Do, or do not.

Re: New Firebird Release

Firefox is godlike :P

Re: New Firebird Release

I will download the new version soon, I just must try it smile

Buttons are fun. I added one to the bottom of my PunBB, between the Jump to and the copyright. =)
Then for the heck of it, I added the quotes about Firefox too, since Joel's quote was what first convinced me to switch.

Edit: Screenshot (below)

If anyone wants the details, here's how you can modify your forums to add them:

CSpotkill's Mozilla Firefox Button PunBB Mini-Mod

1. Open footer.php and save a copy as footer.bak in case you make a mistake.

2. Search the file for "Powered by", it should be about three quarters down the page.

3. Copy the following:

<td style="text-align:right">
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/"
title="Get Firefox - Web Browsing Redefined">
<img src="http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/buttons/getfirefox_large3.png" width="178"
height="60" border="0" alt="Get Firefox"></a>
</td>
<td style="text-align:left">
        <dl id="quotes">
        <dt>?<a target="_blank" href="http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback.html?article=4145">
                ...nothing short of a revelatory experience</a>.?</dt>
        <dd><em>- Maximum PC</em></dd>
        <dt>?<a target="_blank" href="http://forbes.com/infoimaging/2004/02/04/cx_ah_0204tentech.html">
                ...a breath of fresh air... Microsoft should be worried</a>.?</dt>
        <dd><em>- FORBES</em></dd></td>

4. Paste all the above code between the </td> and <td class="puntopright"> which should be located above the "Powered by" text.

5. Save footer.php and test it in Firefox ;)

Note: You may want to disable the Jump To box if your forum titles are very large.

Re: New Firebird Release

Here's a screenshot of the "Mozilla Mini-Mod" I posted above:

http://www.CSpotkill.com/mozilla-mod-preview.png

I posted that on my forums and already five people have switched and thanked me for it ;)

And it's just occurred to me, seeing this screenshot, why would it say "... and 0 guests" if guests are disabled from reading the forum?
As far as I can tell, it doesn't change to "1" guests when someone's signing up or hasn't logged in ;)

Re: New Firebird Release

It should increment the guest count when someone is signing up or logging in.

It doesn't ... or at least, not the way I tested it:

I loaded Mozilla (with myself logged in) and I loaded Opera (with myself not logged in).

Using ALT+Tab and Refresh, I went between them, trying to load my website and load the registration, then seeing if it updated the guest-count.

Based on that, it didn't work. Does it employ IP address checking, or have I stumbled upon a bug in PunBB 1.1.1?

Re: New Firebird Release

hehe, just caught my Mozilla Mini-Mod at http://www.cactuz.nu/

Looks good ;)

I really think the quotes add something that the button alone lacks ? a personal recommendation, as it were. Firefox kicks ass! =D

It is IP based. You can't be logged in and a guest at the same time coming from the same IP.

Re: New Firebird Release

Ben Goodger (from The Mozilla Organization) wrote:

We've put a lot of thought into making using Firefox easy and obvious. Browsers like Mozilla and Opera seem to be focused more on esoteric features, at the expense of all-round usability. That's why we have created a browser that works in the simplest and most straight-forward way out of the box. Defaults have been carefully chosen so you don't need to spend time setting up the browser. Menus and dialog boxes are kept clean and free of options that only a marginal number of people use. If there's a feature that Mozilla or Opera has that Firefox lacks, it's probably for good reason. But if you really do need a particular enhancement, a large number of quality extensions are available for free.

Very PunBBish. But not quite. See, Firefox has an extension system. PunBB doesn't. Should it? Post your ideas here.

Louis: Stop posting links to that topic. I'm sure people will notice it anyway.

lol fine. Should I have mentioned the Firefox connection without mentioning the link? It wasn't spam, intentionally ;)

Re: New Firebird Release

Just picked this up from Digital Media Minute
http://www.digitalmediaminute.com/archives/000498.html

It seems there were 73,000 downloads of Firefox on the day it was released plus 30,000 failed downloads. Half the downloaders were identified as being IE users.
