Hi I have an old version on a site made in 2004.

I wondered if there was a simple captcha that could be put on it.

The look was customised so I assume upgrading the site would be lenghty

2004? That's 1.1, most likely, which isn't updated anymore. I don't know that any modifications for that version exist anymore.

If I uploaded the latest version could I rplace the new database directly with the old one

No, but the upgrade shouldn't mess with any data in the database. The only issue is any modifications of the files themselves.
