- folding
- taglist (quickjump to functions)
- color highlighting
- syntax cheking

That's why Visual Studio 2008, Microsoft Express, Dream Weaver are available.

I did try thinking of a subtle response to that but failed miserably.

In all honesty, that is a complete load of bollocks spouted through ineptitude and|or ignorance.

Matt you don't have to agree with me.  I'm sure you're a good programmer, probably more Software Development experiences than me but let's be realistic.

You probably use VI for your PHP programming, if you have a chance to use Zend Studio for Eclipse, you probably do a lot more what VI can do. I can give you a few features:

* Project Navigator (Explorer)
* Refactoring   (rename function in entire project)
* Setter and Getter
* Function outline
* CSS Preview
* Jump to a function by hold down control + click (doesn't matter on what file ... eclipse will open that file for you)
* and there are many more.

Re: What is the best Webdesigner Software

You have mentioned nothing there which cannot be done with minimal effort directly from command line tools, other than CSS previewing. That is what browsers are for, however. I have no intention of agreeing with your opinion. However, stating that your preferred tools are better than others is, to restate what I said earlier, complete bollocks.

If you're happy with what you personally use then all well and good. Don't state blatant untruth's, however. Whatever form of editor etc which one uses is completely dependant upon ones personal preferences, 99% of the time. Accept the fact that your opinion is exactly that and not a statement of fact. I, for one, would use Vi whatever the scenario. I've tried a lot of the other tools and, personally, I detest them. However, I wouldn't attempt to try and say that all other options are crap. It's merely preference.

Re: What is the best Webdesigner Software

Matt ... I never say that the IDE(s) that I preferred are better. I personally like Notepad, but sometimes we need to go outside the box, and explore other IDE(s).  I did say that I do use notepad for quick fix and stuffs, but in a large development environment a professional IDE should be used instead.

I've tried a lot of the other tools and, personally, I detest them. However, I wouldn't attempt to try and say that all other options are crap.

Can you name a few IDE that you have used and were crap?

I never said any were crap. I merely said that I personally detested all other tools I had tried. I obviously wouldn't still be using Vi and other command line tools if anything else had rocked my boat.

Again, that is nothing more than your opinion/preference. The word 'should' is out of place.

Re: What is the best Webdesigner Software

Okay fair enough ... What do you use to write action scripts? or flash file with action script?

Let me guess  ... VI again?

My point I'm trying to make here is VI, NOTEPAD are simple and easy to use for quick fix here and there but they are not the best tools for Software Development, because may not designed as Software Development IDE tools.

Matt ...  if you keep arguing that VI is the best tool for the software development, then there is nothing I can say.

all in your opinion.

I too have tried various things over the years and always fall back on my favourite text editor.

my mind is on a permanent tangent

Seeing as you find it perfectly acceptable to ignore what I actually write and transpose it with your opinion and interpretation, saying nothing more would be a boon, IMO, as I have no intention of repeating what I have said several times before, just so that you can again ignore what I wrote.

Re: What is the best Webdesigner Software

Matt you can be happy with your VI for everything (include editing: flash file and action script)

Here are some of the IDE that I have used in the past, for those who are interested you can check it out.

PHP, JAVA, JSF:  Eclipse   (free) , Net Beans (free)
ASP.NET, C#, VB.NET: Visual Studio 2008 Express (Free), Visual Studio 2008  Professional (<$300)
HTML, CSS, DHTML, Javascript: Notepad, Dreamweaver CS3, Microsoft Expression, (someone mentioned FrontPage: FontPage has been changed to Microsoft Expression)
Flash:  Adobe Flash
Silverlight: Microsoft Blend
UML to Code: Altova
Source Control:  SVN (free), CVS (free), Team System 2008, Visual SourceSafe

I sometimes use Notepad, vi (shell scripting) for quick fix only.   I better version of Notepad is Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm)

For those who like to program in PHP 4, PHP 5, and Zend Framework (MVC Framework) try:
Zend Studio for Eclipse ($399) (if you think you can make money from your PHP program, which I often do).  I've been using it for 2 years already and I really like it.

This post will concluded all my posts.   Happy Programming!

Hope this helps

Re: What is the best Webdesigner Software

> Scripted : The problem with the IDEs you mentioned is that not all of them are natively compatible with Linux.  Don't forget that some people here use Mac, Linux or BSD as their main or only OS.

On my side, as my main OS is Ubuntu Linux, I use gedit, the distro's default text editor, for my PHP, XHTML and CSS development.  And when I boot on win XP, I use Notepad++

Ubuntu Linux 10.04 LTS / Windows XP SP2
GIMP 2.6.8 (advanced), Inkscape (newbie)
XHTML/CSS (advanced), PHP/MySQL (medium)
Don't ask what free software can do for you, but what you can do for free software.

Well, this is not really correct. I own three companies, and each of the developers I pay may consider and use vi / vim, emacs, and similar applications.

In real world situations, the editing capabilities especially of vim and emacs surpass Visual Studio and Dreamweaver by multitudes, especially if your are working on web application development, and - like I do - work in areas where development is heavily driven by specifications.

vim and emacs really show some shiny abilities when it comes to working of templates, snippets, and all the like.

I have been allowing Dreamweaver and Visual Studio in my companies, but we dumped those ~ 2005 after two projects where we relied on vim and co, and discovered that the workflow and time consumed was less.

Wordpress is by far the best and easiest for me to use. My favorite so far is StudioBlue!
