Punbb simple forum and fast.
Php - functional, but complex.
PunBB - hook system, phpbb - mod system.

I used both of them and i think phpBB is best open source forum , but main question is what do you need ?
Do you need a simple , fast and powerful for administrator and users , PunBB is the best one .
If you need a big forum and more functionality , phpBB is great solution ...

By far outdated, phpBB uses an extension system since version 3.1.0, 3.0.x and below used a modification system.

I used phpbb in the past but now I am trying to use punbb, installed punbb on my site and testing something out.
As my experience, Phpbb is a good forum cms and you should try to see how it works, and how it will fit your requirements or not.

You can download PunBB 1.3 language packs here: http://punbb.informer.com/wiki/punbb13/language_packs
Or start a translation if the pack for your language is not present. Kindly check if your language is present on the list. Hope this help.

phpbb is crap software Updates might be very complicated if you have installed mods.
and punbb is actually the lack of features that makes PunBB so good. If you prefer fast, this is a good choice.

punbb much better than phpbb because phpbb been using it for years on and off, haven’t used it in 2 or 3 years. Always seems to get hacked.. usually a hit by some russian porn ad ring but punbb better releases in the svn.
