Topic: Don't tell me to chmod cache to 777, what I want to know is...

I see so many post talking about chmoding the cache directory to 777.
But that is NOT good enough an answer.

What I WANT to know is, what are the owner, group and public permissions?

Each for Read Write Execute.

Knowing the answer to this, then I can select the appropriate boxes.

It is really neccessary to enable permision for everything with 777?

What is public read and execute permission for? Isn't write permission enough for avatars and cache directory?

everything depends on how your webhost is configured ... chmodding it to 777 will make sure the user the webserver is running as has full access to that directory ...
(777 = read + write + execute for owner + group + other)

Come on don't give me such an answer. You should be able to tell that I already know such an obvious thing. Please I need a more intelligent reply.

I want to know how does punbb use each of those configurations specifically.

I want to know what are the owner, group and public read, write execute options SUPPOSED TO BE for punbb, and WHY for each one.

If answering what you want means giving the same answers that have already existed before that I could find myself, then I don't need to waste my time here at all.

if you asked a question in a more polite mannor, and didnt demand stuff of members here, then prehaps you might get an answer you want  (sort of what ludo said earlyer).
people try and help out in this forum as much as they can, but with people demanding things, they dont get helped.

Apache usually runs as a different user, so it falls under "Others". If you chmod 770, it can't access the files and so can't display them.

If you control your environment (host yourself) then you can chown to the user:group (debian is www-data) and set chmod 770, because www-data is already the owner and group. This might not work if you are pushing out of your /home/public_html directory (I usually use /var/www/$sitename)

Anyways I've decided to go with phpbb since their installation instructions are more specific about the read/write/execute specifications for all settings.

Change the permissions on config.php to be writeable by all (666 or -rw-rw-rw- within your FTP Client)

Change the permissions on config.php to be writeable only by yourself (644 or -rw-r--r-- within your FTP Client)

Now that's what I call intelligent instructions.

Obiviously people like ludo wouldn't understand that. Anyway I'm done here.

Choosing phpbb instead of punbb is not an intelligent choice. With such a choice, I don't think you can tell who can or not understand what an intelligent thing is.

I beg to differ, punbb has been around for a considerable amount of time already. But why is it that top internet marketers like associate programs, xsitepro and Rosalind Gardner use phpbb instead?

Besides punbb has no profile option to enable notification of replies by email automatically for every post. And what the heck is subscribe to this topic? I didn't know what is was at first until I realised it means receive replies by email. Why can't punbb use familiar terms that everyone understands?

A. Top internet marketers? I can create a page that says that too, it doesn't make it true wink
B. phpBB is used by a lot more people. Why?
- It has been around longer than PunBB.
- There are a lot more resources for it (both in terms of useful/useless mods and in terms of support websites and how-to's)
- phpBB is very popular with one-click installers
- PunBB isn't meant to appeal to the lowest common denonimator (in terms of installing it and getting all the features you'll ever need without ever needing to mod it).

And in case you didn't get it from all posts by others, your post is very hostile and rude: why would you expect to get a decent response?
However, I'm going to respond to your trollish question with another question: if you know enough to understand what the different modes mean and to understand that you don't want to chmod it to 777, then why can't you just look at the code and see exactly what it needs to do and set things accordingly?
