If you're making money from a tool, why not pay the $295 price tag then?
It's a lot cheaper than other tools in it's class and if you charge the going rate for your programming services, it's about a day's pay.

Still a bit to high for what you get. Personally, I can't recommend Ultraedit (or UEStudio) enough. Excellent package, for a very reasonable price

That's my editor, well worth the price of admission
I rather like WeBuilder 2006. Its HTMLPad, Rapid CSS and Rapid PHP combined. Not free but not very expensive either.

I knew you were going to say that
If I pay for something I don't like to be limited on how I choose to use it in the future, I rather spend the $99 for Zend Studio Standard than $29 for a 'learning' edition of a software. Lots of companies has free for personal use, for the simple reason they want lots of people to know their software and therefore beeing in a position later where they might sell licenses. (Microsoft sent me a Educational DVD with the full Visual Studio package (including MSDN etc.), for free)
Either way, the project I'm going to use it on is a very uncertain thing if I will make it or not, mostly due to free time, and I don't want to throw away $300 on something I might not use ... I rather spend those on other things ... that's the reason why I asked if there was anything around .... (and I would probably donate a bunch if I would ever use something comercially, at least similar to what other tools costs ... but that's after I've made the money, if any)

I spent over a month evaluating PHP IDE's and finally decided on Komodo, biggest reasons were that it was cross platform and built atop Mozilla.
I hear you on the cost factor, have you tried PHP Designer? It's not bad for a free product and it's getting more users, which turns into more donations, which gives the developers incentive to keep enhancing it.
I use editpad pro, works good enough for whatever editing I need to do
have you tried PHP Designer?
yep
php designer hasn't auto completion of variables, (I'm actually using it atm, but I'm messing up my variables too much )
but ... I'll keep my eyes open for alternatives ... I guess I have to use another file just to keep track of all variables so that I will be consistent ... auto completion of variables is pretty neat to have ...
Try this site
http://www.php-editors.com/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/trustudio
This integrated with xdebug xdebug.org
http://sourceforge.net/projects/openstudio
http://www.weaverslave.ws/
I use http://www.pspad.com/
I've now started to test out Eclipse, it feels pretty solid and it does what I searched for, and as a bonus I can use Consolas in cleartype
Feels like it could be a keeper
(I just saw that Xumix mentions it on page 2 ... I wonder if I missed it or just didn't figure out how it worked when I first went through this thread?)
I just discovered PSPad, and I'll be using it until Notepad++ includes remote editing via FTP.

Auto Completion too? I should really try this.
yup ... think you need to have the directory as include path to get it to 'feel' all variables and such ... (the files are clickable so one can see what function is in what file )

Thank's for finding this!
EDIT: Wait a sec... I have used this before... I think.
Sounds promising, downloading it now ^^

Aye, Eclipse is a very nice IDE, if an IDE is what you're looking for. You can get a version that's designed especially for LAMP development:

I'm not liking Eclipse =/
*wanders off back to Dreamweaver*
I like eclipse for java, zend studio for php, dreamweaver for pure html, and visual studio for windows development.
Zend Studio is slow as hell on XP =/
On Linux it's my first choice for PHP though
hrm... its always ran fine for me. having numerous large files open it does tend to get weighed down (as does dreamweaver), but I really like its debugger functionality.
I did recently see a demo of phped (which looked promising), and would love to own it, but its not in my budget at the moment. I love zs's code insight, and phped looked even better, but I wonder if you can debug w/ phped as good as you can w/ zend.

Is that the same thing as http://www.eclipse.org/php/ but the difference is that it got Server and Database included?
