wink It is...

After using one, I've realized it's the only way to go.

Screenshot of my duel-screen using UltraMon: ...

Thanks for the UltraMon hookup!  I had been using ATI's catalyst Control Center, and it didn't give me 1/2 the options as UltraMon does.

Awesome.

ameenullah - which shell manager is that one? I used it for a short while before settling on Aston, but I can't remember the name...Is it Talisman?

Anyways, my updated screen, complete with new Miranda-IM, Firefox Minimize-to-Tray, and Winamp theme to match my XP theme.

Re: Your desktop screenshots...

erissiva,

You'd get a real kick running a Linux box, since you like customizing your desktop.

Check out these screenshots of Xfce: http://nupusi.org/screens/xfce/

I tried running some for a while with different systems.

I first started with Fedora Core on a brand new box (PIV 3+ ghz, 512 RAM, etc...)...Wouldn't recognize my cable modem.

After I lost that box, I was downgraded to a crappy box. It wouldn't even run Windows98SE properly.
So I tried Puppy Linux - Wouldn't even boot.
Dehli - Same problem
Damn Small Linux -Worked perfectly, except for the browser. Only eLinks would work. tongue Firefox took a lifetime to start up.

So, I just upgraded the RAM and went back to Win98SE.

Now that I have a new box again, I was thinking of getting a Hard-Drive based Knoppix install, but everyone keeps touting Ubuntu.
The problem is that I'm a Linux "virgin". Total n00b. I can't even get down the basic CHMOD commands. *lol*

Anyways, I refuse to use some distros - Linspire or Fedora Core (hated it...).
I prefer KDE to GNOME for some odd reason. I really don't know why....

Does anyone know a good distro for me?

Specs:

* Total N00b
* Easy to use
* I use it for IMing, Photo manipulation, Music (streaming radio and mp3), Internet surfing...Mostly Internet though.

Box specs:

* Intel Celeron 1.2 GHz
* 384 MB RAM
* 80 GB harddrive (would prefer dual-install so I can keep XP if I don't like the distro, or I change my mind)

Re: Your desktop screenshots...

Like I said - For some reason, only DSL seems to work on my computer.
I'm using DSL right now to post this, running off of a mini-disk.

I'm using the FireFox that came bundled with it. The only thing I don't like is the inability to customize it much.

If I did switch over to Linux, are there any good duel-screen managers like Ultra-mon?

Re: Your desktop screenshots...

erissiva,

Dual monitor support on Linux is called Xinerama and most desktop environments support it just fine. I used to run a dual head Linux box running off of 2 Matrox millenium cards, worked great.

I would go with Ubuntu, you could always try their Live CD first to see how it runs on your system. They have a version running KDE, called Kubuntu.

This is what I use on on Linux box:
IM: Gaim
Photos: Gimp
Music: XMMS or Xfmedia
Internet: Firefox and Thunderbird
Editor: Bluefish

I spent a few weeks comparing desktops on Linux and ended up at Xfce. I can run all the Gnome apps that I want without all the overhead of Gnome. KDE was nice but it took a lot of my memory and resources to run. Since I use my Linux machine as my web server also, I wanted an environment that would be kind on my machine, so Xfce was the perfect fit for me.

Well, let me get off the stump smile

Re: Your desktop screenshots...

I'm checking those out - Thanks, hcgtv. wink
