Could it still run smoothly if the database is carrying 100,000+ threads?

Yes. Try a few million 
It mostly depends on your server hardware though.

My site with 15.5k threads and 221.9k posts and it runs with no problems at all.
It mainly depends on the quality of your hosting (as Jansson mentioned).

yes the limit is the bandwidth and the hardware, not punbb
