you need a skin ..... I mean punbb default is great simple design but if you are serious with your forum you should make some good skin for it .....
I suggest you take a look over at PunRes.org 
yep look at punres and also check templates that are in puntal and frontpage package .... I think some are quite nice.

there are packages named puntal and frontpage for punbb ... I remember that one or both comes with some punbb templates which are quite nice. Do a search on punres.org for puntal and frontpage
you could also make your own. My template design took about 10minutes. punbb is the easiest board to mod around.
i took frontpage 1.4b2 and did all the upgrades i call it frontpage 1.5 i got the rar file if needed?
