Your PunBB is still the smallest & the fastest forum script on the net: Benchmarks with Xdebug. lol
Lets go and shave off a few more bytes from the smile icons by passing them thought great free PNG images lossless optimizer PNGOUT !

I just picked 4 random smilies
The largest size was 0.63 KB (642 bytes) and the second largest was 0.55 KB (564 bytes).
There's not much room for optimization at that point wink

Here are the results I got using the newest version of pngout.exe with PNGGauntlet using the "Brute Force" method.

I ran the smilies through a PNG optimizer (I don't recall the name at the moment), and believe it or not it actually did squeeze sizes down a little.

Edit: Now I remember, I did the same thing that Richard did (his post didn't appear until while I was writing this).
