WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED TO YOUR FORUMS???

Many are closed / unavailable... one even says "bye" on the homepage:  WHY???    Did it close because of costs of running it or another reason?

Also, many more are on a different forum script?!!?!?!  WHY???   Did you move it from PunBB  because of the reason mentioned earlier in this thread... because members requested more features... or another reason?

Well, mine was at www.cspotkill.com and then at www.cszen.com - but that won't work right now, because I'm switching hosts atm. And as I wrote in http://punbb.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=8774 I switched to SMF because of the extra features (and I thought it could handle the load better). While I've no complaints with SMF (certainly, at the time, they had better HTML markup than PunBB) it seems PunBB has evolved farther and faster than SMF, and hasn't needed the extra features to do so. So I'll be switching back, as soon as I can upload everything. (Amazing how much junk can clutter your webspace after a few years)

Re: The biggest PunBB?

This has been lots of fun.... any updates?  Do we have a winner for biggest PunBB installation / usage?   What about 2nd and 3rd place?

Re: The biggest PunBB?

I use a very heavily modified (search completely rewritten with a relevance ranking algorithm, several BB tags added, many forum display and sorting features added or changed, highly integrated into our site, etc) PunBB version originally based on 1.2.6 (I think), but with the most recent updates applied.  This is on an internal site, so I can't give you guys a link, but here are the statistics:

Total number of registered users: 10413
Total number of topics: 13294
Total number of posts: 185397

Database:
MySQL 4.1.19-standard
Rows: 17428425
Size: 1618.62 MiB

Most of the database isn't occupied by PunBB; I think the forum data only takes up about 200 MiB or so.  MySQL 5.0 caused a slew of problems for us in our tests, so we're using the seemingly less tempermental 4.1.  In the future I may move this database to PostgreSQL because it generally scales much better.

Re: The biggest PunBB?

Anybody have an idea of what is required to run board this size?   I know punbb is pretty slim on resource usage, but I'd love to know what is required to run a punbb forum with 9,000 members and 300,000 posts.

I know there are a million server variables, but in general, I'm guessing a shared host couldn't' handle this right?  You'd need some beefed up VPS or Dedicated, correct?

By the way, I noticed Textdrive's punbb forum doesn't have a search on it for guests.  Did they remove this to keep performance up?  I also noticed that http://www.macaddict.com/forums/ is currently unavailable... this made me wonder what was going on.

Looking forward to your replies and experiences with hosting really big punbb forums!

You would have to ask them wink

Well, it looks like they're doing something to the forums and they'll be back in 2.5 hours judging by the message tongue

Re: The biggest PunBB?

Smartys, I'll take your advice and ask you!   You've got 104 forums with 1368 users and 28k posts.   Do you mind sharing with the group what is required to run that?   Can you PM me if you don't want to share?

This whole thread is fun and is helpful to see what punbb can do, but it would be even better if there were more stats regarding the resources the large boards are consuming.   For example, would we expect to see that the boards with over 150 posts per day all run on a dedicated server that is only hosting that forum?   Or is it more appropriate to say boards with over 300 posts per day?    I know there are not hard numbers, but it would be great to know ballpark.

Re: The biggest PunBB?

Try searching, for example, *mac* on http://beta.maclife.com/forums/search.php ... I guess the search query goes too long.

Re: The biggest PunBB?

Yann, you've got an amazingly huge forum.   Any details you're willing to share with us regarding resource usage for a huge punbb forum?

Re: The biggest PunBB?

reviewum > that's not mine wink

Btw, I'm managing a quite big forum too, http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/ . We have a bixeon 3Ghz, 4GB RAM, scsi10k for web, and 1GHz/1GB ram / 18GB scsi 10k for database.
There are also another forum almost the same size, 2 wikis (with quite a lots of hit), 2 planets, and some other crap on these.

Punbb is such a great software, but the search is KILLING it. Cpu usage on sql would be 70% less if search was disabled, although there are other things running on it. I'm actually hoping there will be backports from the search from 1.3 in 1.2, but I don't think there will tongue
