tbh grudon, you're much better off going with XAMPP given your lack of experience and the amount of work required to configure lighttpd
Now, what issue are you having with XAMPP?

It doesn't work that way: you need to install PHP and MySQL and configure lighttpd to work with PHP and PHP to work with MySQL before you can even install PunBB, let alone login
XAMPP has everything Apache/PHP/MySQL related already set up, so you simply upload a copy of PunBB to the htdocs folder and you can install

Lighttpd is actually not that hard to configure at all, though XAMPP would certainly be easier. The main thing to keep in mind when trying to setup lighttpd with PHP on Windows, is that it will not work properly (or at all) running with FastCGI.
The MySQL part though is about as painless as can be

If you try to connect to MySQL without specifying a username you might get that error: otherwise, there should be no issue

Upload was the wrong word, since you're probably using this on the computer you're writing on. Just copy the upload folder into the htdocs folder

Now, now, we were all Newbies at one point.
Saying that, with the advent of Google, it's less of a handicap today.
This thread is getting me to thinking, maybe we can sell PunBB on a stick tm. A complete AMP stack with PunBB configured, on a USB stick. Just insert it into your computer and away you go.
