i followed the instructions on how to upgrade from 1.2 to 1.4 however i do not know how to run the ........update.php please help?

just for clarification i have added all contents of the directory upload/ into your old 1.2 directory (overwriting any existing files).
Copy/upload the script 12_to_1214_update.php from the directory extras/ to the forum root directory and run it through your browser. Follow the instructions. Once the update script has finished you should remove the script from the forum root directory.
i just dont understand how to do that.

I'll assume you mean from 1.2.0 to 1.2.14, since there is currently no such thing as 1.4 
You need to download a fresh copy of PunBB, grab the 12_to_1214_update.php script from the extras folder, upload it to where you have your forum, run it, and delete it.

You upload the file to the same place you uploaded the files for the forum

By entering HTML hyperlinks into this textbox, any number of items can be added to the navigation menu at the top of all pages. The format for adding new links is X = <a href="URL">LINK</a> where X is the position at which the link should be inserted (e.g. 0 to insert at the beginning and 2 to insert after "User list"). Separate entries with a linebreak.

Check the forums options in the admin panel, there's an entry for that.
