Topic: Install PunBB now - or wait?

Hello!

I want to run a PunBB on my privat website.
But I dont want it badly (i could wait some time...).

Should I install the 1.2.14 now
or might it be better, if I wait for a next "big update" (if there is one? in 2006 I read something about it, but cant remember...)

Re: Install PunBB now - or wait?

There's a "big" version coming up, in the next weeks or months: 1.3.

But you can install 1.2.14 right now without troubles, and upgrade later. If you have some basic technical skills, I would recommend setting it up directly for utf-8. It will induce some very, very minors glitches, but it will ease the move to 1.3 especially if you wouldn't use latin1.

is UTF-8 increase database performance?
What the significant benefit of UTF-8 comparing server CPU resources?

No, it doesn't affect performance at all. The main reason to use UTF-8 is that we never have to bother about encodings again, and we can display several different charset/languages on the same page without using some ugly hack (read making htmlentities out of every character).

I see.
It doesn't affect performance to PunBB.
because, at SMF there is a warning to translate UTF. If you need multi-language character, better use UTF-8.

Thanks.

If you need any text at all, better use utf-8.

Sorry for bumping, I had the same question; is there a tutorial or a post here where I can find instructions to set Pun up correctly to be utf-ready (= no issues when upgrading)?

thank you so much!
