Topic: PhpBB 3 shows its face

The chaps who create phpBB have re-vamped their site and based it on the forthcoming PhpBB 3 software.

OF COURSE I'm not suggesting that it's any good wink
but its interesting to see what features and styles they've added.

Re: PhpBB 3 shows its face

Meh.. I like 1.3 much better smile

Re: PhpBB 3 shows its face

There are some things interesting (unicode support, at last) and a few features more, but to release a new major version without clean URI, plugins, and the like... PhpBB is still behind.

Re: PhpBB 3 shows its face

What's a "clean URI"?

In fact, what's a dirty URI? smile

Re: PhpBB 3 shows its face

I too like punbb rather than a beast with 1000 holes.

Re: PhpBB 3 shows its face

"phpBB - The Beast with 1000 holes!" (v3)

Re: PhpBB 3 shows its face

The new site feels kind of heavy to me, maybe it's just a very busy forum?

Re: PhpBB 3 shows its face

Re: PhpBB 3 shows its face

http://blog.punbb.org/2007/03/19/seffancypretty-urls/ - some information about them in 1.3

Re: PhpBB 3 shows its face

I motion to officially name that feature "seffancyprettyurls" (wp's removal of the / and space made me lol when I saw the url for the blog about it).

You will be able to edit the URI scheme for your own twisted dark needs.

Re: PhpBB 3 shows its face

Noticed that phpBB 3 with prosilver uses CSS as well as PunBB. (div, dd, etc.)

Re: PhpBB 3 shows its face

I'll never switch to phpbb again. It's to difficult to modify.

Re: PhpBB 3 shows its face

phpBB 3 uses CSS more than PunBB.

Re: PhpBB 3 shows its face

I would never, ever, NEVER go back to phpBB.

I like punBB so much!! smile

I've stated this before, and it bears repeating:  Using phpBB required you to visit their website for a frigging DIB {Daily Intelligence Brief}

... and even then, you could never catch up with number of hackers that had the latest 'patch' already HACKED!!

BooooooHisssssssssssss .....

No one is suggesting that you do but it's worth seeing what the competition are up to, and taking their best ideas!

So true, cause we're all in this together.

Re: PhpBB 3 shows its face

PhpBB sort of reminds me of a big pile of MOD EDIT.

Re: PhpBB 3 shows its face

I'm actually quite impressed with the output of their forums now.  its all one big unordered list.  while v3 *looks* nice, I'm sure its not as easy to hack as punbb.  I think v3 is a complete rewrite of the original.

mod edit happens on any code base when you have too many cooks in the kitchen and everybody is on a different menu.

Re: PhpBB 3 shows its face

Indeed, the markup seems incredibly improved. Still not good (not valid, cluttered with inline styling, <b> tags, empty tags and useless non semantic nbsp among other things), but it was worst before. Maybe phpbb5 will be valid and somewhat semantic.

I hate that, why go to so much effort and not finish the job properly :S
