I was working with a client who has been using a much simpler (and less secure/more cumbersome) BB script and has been having problems with spammers dropping URLs on her Board. She wanted to upgrade so I suggested we use PunBB.

Upon a successful install I was giving her a tour of the default install and then she asked me a question that I didn't have an answer for. She wanted to know if it was possible for a spammer to use a URL as their login name. I tried it and it worked! Much to my chagrin. Not only did it work but any posts by this user will result in a live link. When I changed the Admin settings to eliminate live links it had no effect on the users NIC. Only when she deleted the user was the link broken but the URL remained in the posts.

Is it possible to tighten this up a bit and/or lock down the allowable names?  smile Could we use REGEX to look for [http|www|\.com|\.org|\.net] etc... in the censor code or does this check the user names?

>>  What about posts that are actually on topic after the "split post"?

Let them remain and in the order they appear. On some Boards they handle it by changing the post within the original thread to read something like "This post moved to ................" with a link to the new location. This does two things. One it keeps the thread's integrity. Two, it provides interlinking for the Search Engines to follow and aids in the site's crawlability.

Ah.

Well perhaps moving a post to an existing thread isn't all that necessary. It really is more likely that a post will need a thread of it's own. Personally, that would be fine with me if that's all I had for an options and that would resolve the issue.

>> There's one problem and that problem is post times.

Is copying the original post time not an option for some reason?

RE: simple

Understood. I will probably add it to my customized version in a few weeks but I thought I'd offer it as a suggestion. As an Admin/Mod it would be really handy for those posters who - innocent or intended - still hijack a thread. A quick way to deal with those situations would save us a fair amount of time.

G.

It'd be nice to have the Edit function (for Admins and Moderators only) include the ability to move a post from one thread to another thread in the same or different forum and/or start a new thread of it's own in a forum of choice.

DOH!

Well - my issue had nothing to do with a firewall but everything to do with my Opera browser. The day before I posted I had unchecked referrer logging in the Options for Opera. It dawned on me that might be the issue and so I turned it back on today and voila - works like a champ. Thanks for listening!

Thanks Rickard,
I am running ZoneAlarm and disabled it as a test. No change. I am also running a Linksys Router/Firewall - which I have not disabled/tested yet. The odd part about this is that the Admin section was working fine a few months ago when I did the initial setup. I'll take the router out of the equation too just to be sure and will report back later.

Hm... I get the following when I replace the referrer check with a dump:

""

My base URL is forums.farm-garden.com and I have the site bookmarked. I haven't been in the Admin section for awhile but I have made many edits from within the Admin area and they all worked fine. It seems this problem only arose recently.

I have a need to know where the users on my Board live. Think in terms of states, geographic regions, shipping zones, or service area zones. I want to track this information and use it to

a) populate new read only categories using the defined regions
b) allow users to search for information and include the region as part of the search criteria
c) provide other information (originates from outside the Board) based on where they live
d) display the poster's regional info with every post as well as in their bio

I didn't find a mod like this so I'm wondering how difficult it might be to develop it.

Questions/thoughts:

1) Some categories/forums don't need to know the region. Others do. So would it be better to just get the region information at the time they register or wait until they want to post?

2) Within some of the forums that are region dependent, some of threads will apply to all of the regions so there needs to be a way for the poster to indicate if the post is for a particular region. I envision it defaulting to their own region but then allowing them to choose from the predetermined list of regions which includes an "All Regions" option. Potential problems with this approach?

3) I have been thinking about making the categories that are region specific read only. It would be nice to allow posters to post to them but I immediately see potential trouble. If a visitor posts to one of the regional categories then the post will need to indicate which of the non-regional categories it belongs to. This may become too complicated for the visitors to understand. It's one thing to give them one way to post and ask them to follow the rules but to provide two different ways may make it too confusing. Granted, it depends upon the level of sophistication of the users and in my case, they aren't tech savvy people.

Your thoughts on this would be most appreciated. BTW - within the short time I've been working with Punbb I'm quite pleased with it. Nice work and thank you.
