But with fixed width of 750 it looks okay on 800x600 but with higher res, it looks too narrow.

Yes, 85% of the width of the screen.

You should also bear in mind that Firefox is not entirely happy with percentage widths, borders etc have a habit of vanishing. If you are going to style with css then fixed width is much easier.

Yes it uses css but the css validates and the pages also validate xhtml 1.0 strict. I tested in IE 6, FF 1 and Opera 8.0. It looks basically the same through all 3 browsers at resolutions ranging from 800X600 thru 1280X1024. I just need to do some things with the fonts.

I just don't think a board owner could be held liable for content posted by users unless you openly allow and encourage illegal activity.

Part of my rules say this

"All posts are the opinions of the author and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the site administrator."

And another part says this

" If you don't want everyone knowing something, don't post it!"

Whenever I post on a publicly accessible forum, I assume that everyone knows it's my opinion that I'm stating and that if I post something that is useful, anyone that wants it can use it freely.

I feel that when we have a board up and let people post, we don't really own what the users post but we do own the space where it's posted. That being said, I would feel obligated to remove something if I know it's violating someones copyright. But if Paul posts some code he claims is his when really it belongs to el_luap, I don't have any way of knowing who owns it. So if el_luap decides to sue somebody, he should sue Paul.

I settled on 85% as a compromise. Not too wide and not too narrow. Shouldn't force horizontal scrolling on lower res and shouldn't leave too much empty space on higher res. Now I can start tweaking the text. Thanks for the input smile

It's not fixed though, it's in percentage.

I'm completely re-doing my site and was wondering what would be considered a good width.

But it seems there are some real diehard anti-microsoft people that think IE is the only browser vulnerable. I remember a post in a forum on another site where a poster asked what they could do to protect themselves 100% against these attacks when online and several people were jumping in saying to get rid of IE and get a "Real" browser like FF. Some people are/were under the impression that FF was invincible to attacks and seemed to have a false sense of security just because they stopped using the evil IE. My answer was similar to what zc923 said in this thread---Unplug your machine and don't connect to the internet anymore.

Also, I think there will be more of these vulnerabilities discovered in FF as it gains in popularity.

Answered my own question.

What you need to do is open the _cs.css of whicever style your using found in the styles/import directory and add tr.isticky td {background-color: whatever} to the bottom of the file. Be sure to change "whatever" to the color you want.

but Microsoft doesn't update IE tongue

True....but alot of people seemed to have thought FF was invincible or something...like it was not vulnerable to any exploits. I think the main reason Windows and IE get hit so hard is simply because that's what the highest percentage of machines are running.  Why go after OS Z running browser Y when only .00000003% of users have that set-up.....Target windows users running IE and reach 90%+ of the machines connected to the internet...

Firefox has unpatched "extremely critical" security holes and exploit code is already circulating on the Net, security researchers have warned....

The two unpatched flaws in the Mozilla browser could allow an attacker to take control of your system....

Goes to show you that it's not just IE that has problems tongue

Yeah, Rickard has made it really simple to modify the code.

If I don't use GWA, can someone using it still get my log in info just by visiting my site?

I don't know....if it's important enough to subscribe to......just check the box when you reply.....takes a fraction of a second.....

Edited to add:

I hate being automatically subscribed to a topic just because I posted a reply.

Yeah if you'll send me one. I've asked several people on various forums and have yet to receive one.

Now I can stop asking people for a g-mail invite tongue
