Sounds like ban by IP is a better solution though... or is the owner afraid that he's on dynamic IP and another person might be banned instead?

I think that's the reason.

Unless I'm missing something, there's no way to check a member's IP adress until they've posted something.  We have a troublemaker who we keep banning, and he keeps coming back.  Most of the time I'm able to pick up on some things that tell me it's him, but until he actually posts, I can't verify it's really him until he posts something and I can check the IP.

Yes, I know we can ban by IP, but the owner doesn't like us to do that.  Is there any way the next PunBB version could capture the IP they were on when they signed up?  Maybe include a "last IP used" field?

I'll consider it. I never really liked the idea of splitting and merging topics though.

We had it in the previous software we were using, and while I admit it wasn't used all that much, it was nice to have when we did need it.

Is the website he is talking about running PunBB?

Yes, we just started using it a couple months ago.  We were using EZBoard (yuk) before that.  Our site is "Customers Suck" if anyone's curious.

I told the owner of our site about this mod, but apparently he has concerns:

The only downside to that mod is that everything goes into the database. And our message board database is huge already. Hopefully someone will come up with a ftp upload version so it doesn't bog down the database.

I don't quite understand what he's talking about, but I'm sure it makes sense to you guys.  Would something like this be possible?

One of our users reported a post yesterday, and as far as I can tell, another mod deleted the thread without zapping the report first.  Now, the report doesn't show, but the message "there are new reports" remains.  It's really interesting if you click on it, because it takes you to the reports panel, and it says "there are new reports", and then right underneath it, it says "there are no new reports."  wink

We recently installed this mod at the site I moderate, Customers Suck!, and I have to say it works great!  Thanks, guys!
