Yes and go for Slackware .... At least I would hehe .... or even better you can go with Zenwalk which is Slackware derivate ...even better and they have server packages ready .... well slack too but maybe for beginner Zenwalk is better

even If punbb developer stops developing this software I don't see problems using it as it is for communities ! .... It already has all that you need really

you have to specify two different prefixes ... and use the same database !

no need for base.css editing ... you have to edit #punwrap in style file  ... #punwrap {width : xxxpx;} instead of #punwrap {margin : x x} ... I am talking from my head now ... but it is something like this

Banning hosts !  Well that feature is really not so needed since pubb is meant to be small and every byte is important   I do not support the feature because it is easily done in other ways. It is matter of couple of seconds to do that IMO
