The demos are cool and everything, but i would like to see a live forum using it, just to get the 1.3 feeling.
Also, some usage feedback.
Damn, can't get enough of it. big_smile

The only thing you need to do is in fact find a way to use the same user database.

Well... there is a printable topic mod out threre. It outputs cleaner pages and all the posts in the same page.

Then you can use for example wget to get all the ages to your local computer.

If I really needed to do this i think the ultimate solution is to write a script that outputs all the data in whatever format you want. But that requires some programming knowledge.

I should point a problem with akismet.
It was developed targeting blog comments. Which is not the same as forum discussions.
For example, a forum usually have threads where the users post many links, that will be considered spam, also if you use words like:
download
pill
sex
etc.
You will likely get you message blocked.

I've tried akismet, it doesn't work properly in a forum, it's way to strict, I got banned like 5 times from my own forum, big_smile
Kind of cool...
Forum administrator: banned
lol

Anyway, I would suggest this for an extension or even part of punbb default installation:
Provide the possibility of defining a threshold for posting links. Like... the admin could set how many messages would a user need to post in order to be able to post a link.
That should work for a long time. If that wouldn't be enough, one could use the same strategy for a list of spammy words. Like... only allow to post words in the black list after this many posts.
Also, post-count based  post frequency cap combined with the above techniques should be effective.

I think the power of this approach is the ability to set the level of protection based on the needs without letting the spammer know what is necessary to bypass spam protection.

Not only this is the fastest, it's also the simplest to understand and it has a cool and friendly support community.
This is one of the coolest pieces of software i've seen.

You lucky bastard, you got here right when punbb 1.3 beta has been released. big_smile

Maybe targeting 1.3 instead wouldn't be so bad idea. The beta is already out.

I should point that that aggregator and the one discussed in this topic are not the same.

I don't remember why I wrote this aggregator instead of using that other one :s ... maybe I was bored, maybe i wanted a small feature that the mannungos plugin didn't have.

Can I add many RSS feeds?

Yes, you can. simply populate the table with whatever feeds you want.

Can I determine a limit of feeds to be published a day?

No. It should not be so difficult to change the script in order to achieve that though.
It's just a few lines of code.
Simply increment a variable and use it in a break condition.

Ok, it's as simple for a programmer as it is complicated for a non programmer sad

All in all, this is a good, fairly simple exercise to improve your php skills.

I had this on a forum that i was running, but it is no longer online... sorry.
Those interested will have to try it by themselves for the time being sad

Keep in mind that this is an extension for punbb 1.2.x.
It hasn't been tested in 1.3..

?
is it me or those two lines of code are equal?

Yes, you can get them in RSS or HTML format very very easily, you can even decide which forums to include in your feeds.
Check punbb oficial documentation:
http://punbb.org/docs/dev.html

Ok, I red the 1.3 beta anouncement again, the demo extensions explain themselves.
Sorry, thought there was one.

I've looked around and i can't find it.
Can anybody point me the way?
I can't wait to try it.

A pinned topic on punbb beta talk would be a bad idea either.

you should defenately do that.
There's no point in having SEF urls in the admin interface. Keep it simple.

I don't think you will fall into a critical security hole, but the referer  check makes things a bit more trick on the attacker side, so it's good to have it.
So i guess the answer is: none really. or... you will take one first ( very thin though ) defense down.

PS:Camarada, sem problema, esse inglês está bom. big_smile

crop,

1. The number display format depends from country to country. For example, where I came from nobody really looks at 17,434 as seventeen thousand... It stands for seventeen 'point' ...
So I guess a goos solution would be give freedom to the admin to choose the display format, if this is not made yet.

2. Personally i think that will confuse the users more than it will help them. But that's my opinion. Anyway, I don't see a reason why this should come by default. Simply add it to your template if you really want.

3. Once again, i consider sub forums a huge mistake. It is a popular request though. Don't really know what to say about this one.

4. It doesn't make sense to have by default. A plugin should pop up whit that.

bingiman,

1. Absolutely. That would solve at least 95% of the spam problems. It's the most effective spam protection i know.

2. indeed.

3,4,5 - bahhh... punbb in not bloated software.

6. It needs database changes so i don't know about that. If it's not enabled by default i don't see how to implement it cleanly.

Woot!
Big day!

I'll wait until hcgtv updates the source in phpxref.com so i can dig through the hook and extension systems.

mmmm... cant wait for that extension developer manual.

I would suggest that the hook sugestion thread included a list of current hooks location.

Congrats guys. Thank you for developing such great open source software.
I will also try to contribute witha translation to portuguese, but i think i'll wait until things get more stable, final release maybe.

How will the styles be installed in 1.3?
Lets say a style has some template tweak, do one need to go and upload files to diferent folders?
It would be cool to be able to wrap styles in a folder, including theis specific templates.

mmmm... bramble, I would say it's phorum.
I didn't checked the source code, but it has all the characteristics of phorum otherwise. If it's not phorum at least is a clone of it.

phorum is cool, i've used it before, unfortunately they got too stuck in their own original ideas rather than listening to different opinions and evolving in the right direction like punbb did.
But of course, that's just my opinion.

supermag, I mean no offense with this, but i also got the impression you just heard about SEO and refered to it as if it would be a new thing to everybody else in here, when in fact there's quite a big amount of experienced webmasters and coders in here. Starting in the dev team.

The urls do matter. .htm, .html or no extension, I have never found a proof of any difference between any of those, but they are more SEF then using extensions like .php. Google publicly says it. There is a limit of indexed urls when they only difer in their querystring. So, yes, rewriting does matter. For those who insist that it doesn't, please read this before any repply
http://www.google.com/support/webmaster … topic=8522

Supermag, you might want to give a look at a SEO script i wrote for punbb
http://punbb.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=14186

It features url-rewriting with meaningful urls, you can use it together with a tweaked topicview and you get the same effect as vbseo.
In fact I am curious, What's so special with vbseo?
So far you only pointed url rewriting, are we all forgetting punbb was the first forum software outputting clean valid XHTML?
I know a few stuff that could be changed in punbb's output that would help when it comes to seo. I can tell it latter, now I would really like to know what does VBSEO has that you think it's effective in terms of seo.

now, in repply to several posts in this topic... saying that content is the best SEO doesn't contribute with anything to this discussion, SEO is about getting the maximum out of a website content, not about touching the content itself. There's nothing wrong with SEO.
Also, another common mistake repeated a few times in here: having 100.000 indexed pages doesn't mean a website is SEF, at all. It's no use to have many indexed pages if they don't get visited anyway. I prefer to have 50 indexed pages but geting on the top of google for each page keywords.

Yep... headers are easier to remember. I don't think there's any problem in matching for example [h1] to <h4>, [h2] to <h5> and [h3] to <h6>.
By the way, I take the opportunity to suggest a hook right after the bbcode arrays so on can easily create a costumized bbcode plugin.

I made a few searches and surprisingly I only found one single topic talking about this. I would guess this would be talked about kind of often.
Is there any plans of adding bbcode for the size in punbb 1.3?
I think that's kind of a basic feature and I don't see so much disadvantages of adding one more tag to the parser.

Ok... maybe some tags like [h1], [h2] [h3] instead might be better.
