PunBB has a standard password generation feature if email confirmation is on.

A great feature, very refreshing for new registrants who don't have to expend any mental energy figuring a new strong password for the new site they are joining.

Another cool and practical thing in Silicon Investor was that one could add interesting users as "peoplemarks". It doesn't mean friends, but people who have interesting things to say or are knowledgeable about -say- punBB, so I want to keep an eye on them, otherwise if I enter here a month from now I won't even remember what their nicks were.
So when I go to my OWN PROFILE here, I'd like to be able to see, at first glance, not just all my recent posts and my "subscribed topics" ("subjectmarks" were called in Silicon, meaning threads of interest), but also my "peoplemarks" (e.g. Smartys, Sirena, Rickard, etc), so I can quickly see if they've written something interesting today, and where. On large forums it's much easier and practical to follow people -that over time we've learned to appreciate and trust- instead of endless topics/threads. If there is a way to add peoplemarks right now I haven't found it. I keep mentioning Silicon Investor, because, in its heyday, it was such a cool, well designed, practical forum that facilitated so much the interesting and intelligent discussion that took place there. The threads (topics) there had thousands of pages. It was a huge and very active forum, but one could quickly see where the people one cared about were hanging out that day and skip the rest. There was also a list of "Hot topics", that was very useful.
It's a good place to draw inspiration from: http://www.siliconinvestor.com .
In a word, make profiles in general more interesting, and also make our OWN profiles more USEFUL:
1) peoplemarks please! (essential feature);
2) all our subjectmarks/subscribed topics right there;
3) all our recent posts, present, past, and since day 1.
Everything immediately displayed, at first glance, without further clicks.

Another suggestion: When one clicks on someone's profile, all their recent posts should be shown immediately, without having to click again on "Show all posts". In short, make profiles more interesting. That's the way it was in Silicon Investor.

But if clicking on someone's profile takes you to the search results, how would you get to the actual profile?

Example:

If I click on Rickard, I want to see this:
http://punbb.org/forums/profile.php?id=2

AND ALSO THIS (COMBINED, in the same profile page, without having to do a second click on "show all posts")
http://punbb.org/forums/search.php?acti … ;user_id=2

And maybe also the poster's pic, if he/she wants to show one. Or a place to add a (longer) comment, quote or something that may give a better idea of who the person is.
That would make profiles much more interesting and meaningful without adding any clutter, imho.

I would like 1.3 to look exactly like this BY DEFAULT, out of the box:
http://forum.textdrive.com

It's the theme/style I use right now, so neat and elegant.

I hope the changes in 1.3 are under the hood only but the general look & feel of the board remains exactly the same. As elegant and neat as it is right now.
From the screenshots of 1.3 I've seen that doesn't seem to be the case and it's looking slightly uglier.

Another suggestion: When one clicks on someone's profile, all their recent posts should be shown immediately, without having to click again on "Show all posts". In short, make profiles more interesting. That's the way it was in Silicon Investor.

I just don't know at this point which plugins will become official extensions.

Polls, please.

Basically what I want to do is divide #brdheader DIV.box in 2.
Is that correct? Can anyone help me with the details? ;-)

I'd like to add a graphic ad banner in the top right corner, while keeping the text-only board title and board description in their exact current positions (top left corner).
I'm not a wizard with css yet, so I need help positioning those things.
All I know so far is that I have to edit include/main.tpl... ;-)

I am desperately looking for a gallery script to add to a punBB forum and some other sites in general.
Ideally it should follow the spartan, elegant style of punBB, meaning: text-only as much as possible, fast, simple, secure.

I've made this list, but I am very undecided on which one to choose:

Gallery scripts
    PhpWebGallery (!!!)
    Simple Php Gallery (SPG) (!!!)
eSPG (enhanced Simple Php Gallery) (!!!)
    Gallery 1 (!!)
    Gallery 2 (!!)
    Qdig (!!!)
    Coppermine
    Photopost (commercial)
    Plogger
    MG2
    Singapore

The ability to integrate with punBB in the sense of sharing usernames/passwords for members of the forum would be a nice addition but is not essential.
Are there any others I should take a look at?
Any recommendations?

How I wish PunBB came with a nice gallery script out of the box...

Thanks for any advice

It's on the way.
Thanks Smartys.

I give up. For some mysterious reason, the conversion is not working, I keep getting that same error message.
Perhaps it would be easier to convert an offline .sql file backup manually (with a text editor) to punBB instead of using the converter? I have no idea really, but maybe it's just a matter of replacing or renaming a few things here and there.
I need a volunteer who can help me convert one small phpBB forum (the backup is around 1mb large) to punBB. If that works, then I have another one, around 11mb large, that needs converting too.

Well, actually nothing should be added, I just found out. What I wanted is regulated by .pun H3.
So I changed .pun H3 in oxygen.css from the current 1.1em to

.pun H3 {FONT-SIZE: 1em}

That did the trick. Now it looks exactly like I wanted.
Beautiful board. Much better out of the box than phpBB.

Should I add it? Because I see .pun everything but no .pun b

I've noticed that the font of forum names in the main index (for example here "Bug reports", "Feature requests", "Troubleshooting", "Show off", etc) is slightly larger than the rest.
I think the bold is enough to make them stand out, and while keeping them in bold I would like to make them the same size as all other fonts (verdana 8pt?).
What is the css element that controls that? I've perused the oxygen.css but all I see is .pun this and .pun that.

Hi,
When using the PunBBMigration Tool 1.4.0 -and even though I follow all instructions carefully- I always get this error message when trying to convert a PhpBB forum to PunBB:

"Unable to fetch guest information. The table 'users' must contain an entry with id = 1 that represents anonymous users."

The funny thing is there are NO anonymous or guest users in the forum I am trying to convert.
Any ideas?

The best promotion is word of mouth and excellence. Eventually people do notice.
What caught my attention about this forum script is it's beautiful and elegant design out of the box. It's surprising to find that's it's also very intelligently done under the hood.
I arrived here from Wikipedia's mini-portal on open source software, was reading an article there comparing a list of open source forum scripts. I was curious to find if there was something else, something better than phpBB or vBulletin, and when I visited punbb.org I knew instantly, from the design and style of this website, that I would like this script.
I've been using phpBB for years, but was always annoyed at it's horrible default "subSilver" template, childish and full of unnecessary graphics, that I had to modify for hours in order to please my tastes.
I think with punBB I've found what I was looking for. Now I need to convert the phpBB databases of several different sites of mine to punBB. I'm still dragging my feet though because punBB doesn't support private messaging and polls, and don't want to break anything when doing the conversions.
Congratulations Rickard for your beautiful creation: punBB. Keep up the work please. I'll make a donation to the project soon.
