thanks for the tips smile

I'd like to convert from SMF/Simple Machines 1.1.4 to PunBB.
The old converter only mentions SMF 1.0.5. During the conversion, what is lost, just the user passwords?
Is there a way to send a mass email to users with PunBB to tell them to log in and change their passwords?

As long as your forum have "valid email" rules from your old forum (SMF).
Its easy. Give the "big" announcement at your forum.

Just modified the "login.php", change some information or add more link explanation that will redirect
to Loss Password

http://your-forum.com/login.php?action=forget

Your Member or User forum will follow the process.
And then, the important thing is "modifying" some parts like:
1. /lang/English/login.php
2. .................../mail_templates/activate_password.tpl
3. etc..

That what I did (a year ago) to convert thousands of my member forum from SMF into PunBB smile

thats why, this topic discussion talk about anybody using 1.3 in a production environment already? smile

I share my experience

Sure different like you said.. Thanks Smartys smile

I am not revert everything, I play with users, posts, and topics only. Using that tables for my old 1.2 scripts. Now running 1.2. Yes, its my own risk.. It just dropping FullText indexing on Posts & Topics to gain SQL space. Rebuilding search index from 1.2 admin panel, for search function (almost 2 hours indexing on 26663 topics and 373654 posts).

For new indexing feature on 1.3, I read and learn this (read comments at bottom) http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/ … dexes.html
Its fulltext indexing like Smarty's said..
Maybe, thats explain why 1.3 faster than 1.2 smile

Yeah, Rickard already told. Many schema changes on 1.3.
Mods/Plugins progamming totally change. I am still learning how to make or convert some plugins in to 1.3 new scheme..

After one month using and playing 1.3. Its great and faster. I am creating simple portal (frontpage style) to display new topics from few forum categories choosen, including recent post. Even, I am not expert on CSS programming.. But, that's our visitor like. Its different like other forum around there.

One important thing for big forum, something missing such PM feature etc. My visitor need those feature, and other mods/plugins feature that work on 1.2. Thats why, I revert to 1.2.
For new PunBB user, better to use 1.3, even still in Beta. PunBB 1.3 offer future feature and compatibilities for feature release (1.3 Final). Extension easy to learn without touching core files.

Probably because of the fulltext index.

Of course it is.. wink

@others : in 1.3 the search index is included in topics and posts tables (as it is now managed internally by MySql), in 1.2.x the search index is in separate PunBB's managed tables (search_*).

Basically, indexes still take (approx.) same place in 1.3 than in 1.2, but they're just located in different places.
So, u can't really compare sizes of tables 'topics' and 'posts' from 1.2.x to 1.3 ones (or u have to keep off the indexes sizes).

Yes, thanks for your explain smile
Maybe this can explain why indexing important?
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/optim … cture.html

Temporary, Now I revert to 1.2x with same posts & topics structure as 1.3 beta.
Learn which table/column are indexed.
Wanna see, how the cpu performance after few days running..

1.3 Beta.. Use it now! Dont wait.. smile

how come when you converted from 1.2 to 1.3 the posts size become double

I dont have idea, why? smile
As I remember, at old PunBB 1.2x there is Admin feature called "Rebuild search index".
If this checked, and do it.. Database growth almost twice. Its cache, Am I right?
Sorry, I dont know why the mysql growth almost twice after upgrading into 1.3 beta.

Yes, I see smile
Thanks..

you got to be kidding me .. 229 mb db .... what is ur site ... i use megapan which have more then 50 mods and i have 300 members + 3000 posts + 600 topics ...
and my site db is 1.XX mb only

Yes correct.
Here my phpmyadmin reports screenshoot smile

First are old databases from PunBB 1.2.x

Mmm, any idea what causes the usage?

I think the mods. I can't remember what mods I've been installed.
I only mark some mods, but still forget and too lazy to give "mark" another mods.
Too many custom code (outside PunBB), I grab it from here and outside there.
Just like everybody and Rickard said.. PunBB is easiest to understand, even with "stupid" newbie moders (not coder) like me smile

Or, I think PunBB 1.2x has indexing search feature that double the size of post Database?
Last time, I delete or I didnt build index (at admin pages) smile
The power and one of my visitor like is Search feature. I am using Search show_new, show_recent and show_24h mods.. That why, my visitor like. They wont go all forum or categories to find what is new post for today. smile

Next month (May 2008) is a year I am using PunBB.
Before that, I am using Yabb, and move to SMF and using it for more 2 years. I like it.
With default install and theme's of SMF (I like Simplicity Themes by Bloc), causing high load resources.. Maybe my hosting provider had bad CPU performance not SMF. Well? smile

3 times, I move from one hosting to another. They complain about my forum resources. One of them suspend my site without reason smile

Can you imagine? I've got headache to download, upload and dump MySQL data every few month!
Last time, I've upload 150MB data one-by-one because internet connection too slow, at that time, the standar old PHPMyAdmin cannot hold few megabytes uploading data. I must copy paste manually into query box.

Yes, I know about dump program. Some hosting doesn't allowed that, I've been warning before.

Until... yes.. Until I found PunBB. Even not too many support community like SMF had, I like how the code wrote. Thanks to Rickard and The Team smile

Finally, with PunBB 1.3 Beta with the extension (mod) WITHOUT TOUCH the core code? Its brillians idea.. Thats why, directly I am moving into Beta. I know the risk for my Production Forum.. But, If I stick with PunBB 1.2x, forever I will forget many "injected" code/mods. I can't make my forum growing with more advantages..  smile

Thats Why, I take the risk..

Permanently, I remove those feature.
Personally, I dont like that. I want to see, Moderator performance (I dont trust them all) smile

Yeah, I think is better to put this feature outside the core (to keep PunBB light) smile
Extension or Mod is good choice

Try create username with [ and ] sign, for example

[T]reo

and post a message by that name.
Then quote that post with another name or you (admin). You will see strange incomplete separate username smile

Example after quote the post:

'[T wrote:
post messages...
reo']

Its should be

Treo wrote:
post messages...

wow, I had problem with Google.
This is the solution smile

Sorry, its only work on Opera sad
IE and FireFox let "the lazy poster" click only smiley.

Wow cool..
Just testing..
I like the code (idea)
To prevent lazy poster (only post smiley), smiley does not show while click. Except, poster MUST BE write some letters first smile

Done!

- Clean up all hooks made for 1.2 (more than 20 modification!)
- Upload latest 1.2.17 to make sure, everything still run and preparing safe way for upgrade
- Start from beginning
- Put the forum maintenance mode for 2 days

Migration from 1.2.17 to 1.3 Beta.

- Deleting whole 1.2 except config.php
- Uploading new Dev 1.3 beta
- Performing update
- It takes 15 minutes for 200MB MySQL database smile
- Take a coffee, and finish....

Playing new "stuff"
- Testing some function and looking for error.. seems okay
- Now looking for available extension, installing and testing
- Start from beginning to make forum look like old. Modifying CSS

to be continue....

cool design. thats why I love PunBB, its easy to modified

Hi Ahmed, nice forum and color theme
I remember the color of PocketQuran program for PPC/Palm by Jalal smile

Sorry, and thank you Smarty smile

Maybe, just like SMF did. Use donation for "next version" or "special" edition of PunBB? smile
Btw, PunBB still amazing for me, simplicity, easy to understand and modified code compare to SMF..
But, still to hard for newbie..

I have been using Punbb for over 3 years on very small to very large websites. Unlikely to the other comments, this is the worst news I have heard so far.

So no, I can not be happy with this news, neither the way this was handled, and people who are should seriously think about it again.

I've been using PUNBB for 2 years on my "large" forum
Before change to PUNBB, I am using PHBB, SMF and VB. Both "really" consuming huge server resources. But, PUNBB? Amazingly fast, simple and my Host did not complain again and didn't kick my forum to another Dedicated Server Hosting that waste my pocket smile

I dont know 1-2 years to go. If PUNBB not free anymore sad

Well, maybe right now I should start to looking new "PunBB" like Forum around there.
Dear Google, please help me..

Yes, its different password methods.
I use LOST PASSWORD, and announce at frontpage of forum.
Its okay now, with more than 13000 members. smile
