Topic: Function of "icon"?

Just in case I'm missing something, what are the various functions provided by the "icon"?

I'm contemplating removing it from the code, afaics its function can be implemented in a simpler way by moving the "inew" class to the adjacent link to change the colour of the linked text.

Its used to create the fake icons which appear to the left of forum names and topic names.
