Topic: Damn! You've converted me.

When I first discovered PunBB I was very impressed but disappointed to see a lack of built in PM system.

I've since installed PunBB on my main site (and 1 other) and I can honestly say that despite having thousands of active users, we haven't missed having a PM system at all. Everyone just sends form mail, which is actually more efficient.

I bow to your superior judgement Rickard (but I won't be eating my hat!).

If you're still interested in the PM system, you can check out this mod -- http://www.punres.org/desc.php?pid=52

Thanks Helter (Danny?)

My point is that I can now see that a PM system is unnecessary!
To have as an optional mod/plugin is fine, but I'm now siding with those that say that it shouldn't be an integral part of the base installation of PunBB.

Hehe.. A funny thing about most PM systems today is that, when you receive a pm, you get a mail saying that you have received a pm. Instead of just sending the message right to your mailbox in the first place. Sometimes it's included in the mail though, but then you're still forced to visit the board in order to reply when you really just want to use your mail client. Seems rather redundant and stupid to me.

Congratulations on your new insights though smile

Re: Damn! You've converted me.

there are a number of reasons for having pm's on bb's.  1. some would rather have correspondence flow through their site which can be monitored and keeps people coming back to the site (to check pm). 2. users never contact others directly.  I would rather have my kids using a bb that never allows random bb subscribers from emailing them directly.  direct contact is fine for responsible parties, but as we all know, not everybody you meet on a board or chat is who/what they claim. 3. it keeps your email address out of people's contact lists who you don't absolutely know to be virus (spam) free.  if you send a pm/email to somebody and they reply, your email addr is stored in their history which may fall prey to some unscrupulous bit of code, and wham, you're getting 500 emails for viagra a day.

personally I'm an anonymous freak so I'd never want ppl emailing me directly unless I give permission.

Re: Damn! You've converted me.

As I understand it, form mail in PunBB doesn't reveal the email address of the person that receives the message, just that of the sender. So users retain their anonymity. I suppose they can still be spammed via form mail.

Does PunBB have a flood/spam limit?
Can you only send so many form-mail messages in a minute?

Re: Damn! You've converted me.

I've never used punbb's form mailer (admins get the email addr).  how does one respond to a form sent email if there is no sender, or the sender is the board admin email addr?

Re: Damn! You've converted me.

The person receiving the message gets the email address of the sender, I think.
I sent one from this board about an hour ago to myself but haven't received it yet.

There is a sender, MadHatter. Try sending yourself an e-mail through the forum.

Re: Damn! You've converted me.

I have enough with keeping track of emails, forums and feeds nowadays. Add in a PM system and it's just one more thing to keep an eye out for. I frequent a vBulletin forum and I often times forget to check my PM's. I think it's used more for moderator communication than anything else, from what I've seen on the boards I frequent.

That's not to say a PM extension would not be a welcome addition, as would any other wished upon features.

And yes, PunBB's forum mail does contain the senders email address.

Re: Damn! You've converted me.

I thought it sent the email address of the sender (and just tested it from here), so yea, the only thing the form mailer stops is bots that scrape html and gather email addresses. user anonymity is always going to be compromised using email over pm.
