cannot install extensions

i downloaded extensions from the official repository and extracted them in /forum/extensions/ and they just shop up as a generic text file and does not show up on my forum for installation in the extensions window.  i used the 1.4 extension package. both of them.

i have tried to use all the formats but none of them work. what am i missing?
