Topic: forum_head issue with customizing theme

I've been trying to solve this theming issue all day - I figured I'd come ask the gracious experts. (And be on the way myself to becoming such a good helper.)

I am trying to make http://devio.us/forums look like http://devio.us obviously.

The problem is, my top gray background is disappearing unless I remove
<!-- forum_head -->
from main.tpl

Any ideas on how to edit forum_head so that my background is displayed?  yikes

Then I'm off to figuring out why everything has moved to the left.
