Topic: Blogs anyone?

I finally got around to setting up my own little blog. I'm lazy so I went with blogger.com. I'm really gonna try to post stuff a little now and then. If nothing else, it will help my work on my english skills. You can find the blog at http://blog.punbb.org/

Do you guys have any blogs and/or do you know any good ones I should read?

Edit: The DNS subdomain addition might take a few hours to go through.

Is it a default template? Because it looks really amazing, really cool (and I'm very picky with "cool"), and I´ve no idea about blogs. This E3 owns, btw :D.

Yes, it's a default template. There are quite a few. You should check it out. Signing up takes only a minute.

Another cool thing about it is that you can host your own blog. When you sign up you choose if you should go with their hosting solution or if you want to host it somewhere else. I'm hosting my blog on my own server. When I update the blog, the actual HTML is generated on their server and is then automatically FTP'd to my server. It's weird, but it works :)

Blogger was relaunched on Sunday with a new and improved look and feel.
The templates are all new and done by some of the biggest name in the xhtml + css business brought together by Douglas Bowman of StopDesign.

As to why the html work is done on blogger server...
That is the practical solution, all is done from a centralized location, almost no setup required on your part on your website, you just supply the ftp user/pass combo and blogger takes care of the rest.

Among other things one of the new stuff they introduced is the ability to blog through email, not a new concept but a new one at blogger, the subject line becomes the blog topic and the body becomes the blog.

I have a personal blog but as it's in Icelandic I doubt you'll enjoy it much smile

As I'm spending to much time doing websites the main blog pages I read are from the guys I mentioned earlier in connection with the blogger redesign.

Indeed this sounds weird. Perhaps this is to enable people with only static html hosting to start a blog using their existing host? Otherwise I really wonder why go through Blogger.com if you could set up your own system on your own server.

From another perspective, seeing it's now a part of the Google "machine", perhaps this means that as Blogger.com processes each post, Google.com immediately gets the page indexed? Since all the page content (and links) are maintained by Blogger.com, this also goes to elliminate dead links? As weblogs contain more and more information, seizing this opportunity to have first-hand access to weblog posts perhaps has some commercial value?

But then I'm not an IT person, these are just me wondering aloud. smile

As for me...I'm reading up slowly on the possibility of integrating WordPress and PunBB. I think the two make a perfect pair, although I am really at a loss when it comes to a rationale for running the two together at the same time, given that it's going to be a personal weblog. sad

The advantages are many. The major one being that even a complete idiot can set it up.

Not sure about the dead link, but yes, google processes the blog entries immediately (you can choose if you want google to index it) and yes, I'm sure it has commercial value for Google. How is another question :)

I've tried the blogger thing, hard to find time to keep up with it. Used to use Greymatter, but now just go with custom journal module in my someday CMS (actually WMS- website MS)

I had a blog, but I didn't update it much and it was just sitting there with a lot of allocated space and bandwidth I could be using for other things, so I dropped it and started using the domain for my home/testbed server smile

I'm moving my website from one machine to another - in the process I want to replace mysql with postgres/pgsql.  Part of this is looking for a replacement for S9Y (www.s9y.org) PHP blog software (it's large, unweildy, a feck to customise, etc) so started looking for alternatives...

Not using mysql pretty much removes everything out there...

Then it hit me...   What is a blog anyway?

I write an article and it gets saved in a db.
My home page pulls it from the db and displays it.
Others comment on that article.

mmm, sounds like a forum to me - surely it would be trivial to extend PunBB to blogging?  Built in searching, archiving, etc - those who like the forum interface can read that way.

Too right... with punbb's posting, editing and searching features, you don't really need to reinvent the wheel by installing another CMS/blogging system.  Look for PunNewz and also Reply Only mods (as Paul suggested), which is what I'm using to power the front page of my site.
