Topic: PunBB Vs myBB

Just wondering if anyone has tried out myBB and how it compares to punBB?

I think the attraction is that while not being as bloated as phpbb etc, it's got all the features you would ever need right from the start (i.e. you don't have to mod it to bits)...

i got an error stating that mybb.threads table was missin so i stopped. i'll give it a try tomorrow.

it looks good tho. the official forums run pretty fast and seems to be pretty lean. BUT it's no punbb. wink

Its not really in the same league as punBB. While it does have less bloat than most of the other bigger packages...

Could be the other way round... depends which way you look at it.

I should say that I'm still using punbb and probably will be for a while yet.  It's great! big_smile

I've got everything I need through mods.... the only thing that bothers me is that when 1.2 comes out, I might have to reinstall all the mods again.

Re: PunBB Vs myBB

If this is what we're talking about, I would rather go with vBulletin or IPS. I haven't looked at the source, but by just browsing through the forums for a while I see Paul is right, it's in a different league. It has way more features than PunBB. Frankly, I find most of the additional features useless. E.g. user reputation, thread rating, star thingies (based on post count), threaded and linear mode, "send this thread to a friend", favorite threads (what's up with that?), a calendar etc.

BTW, it's incredibly similar to vBulletin. Are they trying to make a free alternative to vB?

Yup, that's the one, Rickard.

The features I find interesting / useful:
- Private messaging
- BBcode buttons
- Threaded view (good for very long discussions)
- Integrated Portal
- Slightly more powerful search
- More detailed stats (for board, topics, users)
- Editing of templates through control panel

I like how they're all built in from the start, and as you can see, their "mods" section of the community forums has very little in it.

Other things like star thingies, etc. are nice to have but as you say, non essential.

Haven't used vBulletin, IPS for a bit only so yeah.
