Topic: .... Considering migrating to Vanilla :(

I decided to give punBB a try after a friend's recommendation and for the most part was completely impressed, however, a few months down the line I still have a few niggles with the software myself, and we've lost quite a few regular posters as a result of this, so I've decided that, unfortunately, it's time for some pretty drastic action sad

I'm thinking of converting to Vanilla, is there anyway of transferring the punBB database into the new forum software?

Just a quick thank you to Rickard and everyone else involved (ConnorHD in particular, he's a bloody star) in the punBB project, you've got a great thing going here, unfortunately though it's just not quite suited to us ;(

You won't find one here. Take a look at this thread at the vanilla forum
http://lussumo.com/community/discussion … converter/

I would seriously try and find out exactly what your members think is missing though. I they are not satisfied with PunBB's features they are likely not going to be satsified with Vanilla either. You might end up in six months changing from Vanilla to SMF etc.

Hi,

Could you tell us what those niggles are, just out of curiosity.

For converting to Vanilla, I would ask on their forums.

Hmm, the fact that punBB doesn't show whether or not a topic has been read alone has turned away a few of our most common posters sad

It does, it just doesn't mark it as read once it's read smile

That mod solves that issue though

Re: .... Considering migrating to Vanilla :(

Yeah, but due to the hosting I'm with I can't install the mod unfortunately sad Thanks for the link anyway!

I dunno, I think we almost definately have to change hosts (cannot thank Connor enough for setting everything up for us and hosting the site for us for what was only a fairly small donation) so was considering changing forum software too while I was at it due to ... I dunno, fresh start and all that smile

Re: .... Considering migrating to Vanilla :(

I'd suggest converting offline then!

www.easyphp.org  <-- offline Apache, MySQl server. Excellent for testing stuff!

Conver the database offline, then upload all to the host smile

Re: .... Considering migrating to Vanilla :(

Pardon my ignorance, but how exactly do I do that? ;o

Re: .... Considering migrating to Vanilla :(

easyphp allows you to host PHP and MySQL websites on your own computer.
The address to the directory where the sites are is http://localhost/
To access phpmyadmin, you go to http://127.0.0.1/mysql/

It's just the same as doing it all online, just that you can do it on your own computer, then upload it to your host.

Hope that help smile

Ahh I see, thanks! I've actually done something similar before with xampp, unfortunately though my connection isn't fast enough to cope with the constant strain of something like that sad

I'll need to get the all clear from Connor too that it's okay to salvage my database!
