 finally looks okay, I think? :)
sticking with the round aliased versions then - here's the complete set:
that one is fine - but I already tried copying the face from that onto mine, and it just doesn't look right for some reason ... I guess painting the whites in the eyes is probably the only way to go though, so I'll try again tonight
I tried eyebrows too, looks weird, and doesn't make it look like he's looking upwards - I can't make it work ...
You could give it a try maybe?
Btw, come to think about the slightly displeased smiley ...
:-/
I think I should include him too?
unfortunately, the aliased version looks terrible on LCD monitors. it's acceptable on oldskool tube monitors of course, but oversharp and "edgy" looking on LCDs.
also, I'm not really satisfied with  but that's the best I could do ... drawing the whites around the eyes to make it appear more like looking upwards, looks terrible, not suitable for this style at all. hm...
yeah, that's basically what I ended up with - refresh and see the updated GIF at the top of this page.
uh, but they are round?
and they do have a black border?
I can make them smoother of course - they are a bit pixelated ... but I can't make the outer rim smooth, since the outer pixels have to be completely black in order to work with any background color. So then the entire rim needs to be fully pixelated, since otherwise the thickness of the rim will vary. Hmm, tricky. I'll see what I can do, and post new ones tomorrow...
8) could be "cool", yeah - or B)
as for rolleyes - I find that animated smileys (or any kind of animated icons for that matter) draw attention where it shouldn't be. Although I guess I could still do one that looks up and to the side, as if rolling eyes ... but how to write it? I dislike textual emoticons like "" - as soon as you start to add those, you can add like a million different smileys, but then you gotta ask yourself why you're translating emoticons to smileys in the first place? I mean, the idea is not to provide an "art gallery" of images you can plaster your page with, is it? the idea, for me, is to translate "lingo" into something everyone can understand.
I always thought :p looks like a tongue, but :P looks more like a cheeky kinda cartoon mouth? your tongue would never come out of the mouth sideways like that ... I think most people who intend it to look like a tongue use the small "p"?
Should I make a few more, maybe? Stuff like "cool" (sunglasses) gets used a lot normally, but I don't like having to write "" or something similar ... is there a "graphical" way to write "cool"? Also, "idea" - any idea how to write that "graphically"?
come to think of it, dedicated style classes for individual TYPES of links might be extremely useful - like for example, if the profile page links in posts (clickable usernames) had a dedicated style class, you'd be able to write a stylesheet with a little user icon if you wanted that.
you can easily keep the default style sheet simple and without repetitions still, while adding a lot more versatility and options for those who design styles.
also, one question - what's with the nested tables? looks like you've got two nested tables, both with disabled borders, where the outer table "emulates" a border by using a background color ... why not simply one table, use border-collapse, and use the border properties? you should get the exact same result...?
I figured it would be nice if PunBB had it's very own set of smilies, instead of just using the same standard set you've seen in so many other forums - so I made these.
If you would like, I would be honoured to donate these to PunBB!
Please use a dedicated class (in the stylesheet) for links - currently there's a class for disabled/inactive links, but other links use no class at all, which makes it impossible to, for example, style the buttons with borders, icons or rollover effects...
I've switched off avatars for the forum - and on the config page, the avatar selection item is then hidden, which is fine. But why is the "show avatars" option not hidden? If the users can't upload avatars in the first place, what's the point in making them choose if they want them shown or not?
I find that pretty confusing - a lot of users are going to wonder how to put up their own avatar, when they see this option is present...
Duely noted - I'll move you up a notch on my funny-scale
no problemo
Rickard, I know you're busy, and I'd be happy to help out - I can write that mod for you, if you'd like.
(note, you may have missed the font color feature, because it's only available to admins)
I'm running MiniBB v1.6 - I found it impossible to upgrade to v1.7, because I was forced to customize the board extensively to make it fit into our site's design; there was no simple way to customize MiniBB's looks with CSS in v1.6...
The font color BB tag was there by default.
The hack_smilies.php plugin for MiniBB is a quick and dirty hack, which translates smilies to <img src="..."> tags BEFORE writing into the database. (I hear there's a death penalty for writing this sort of code in some countries, but I wouldn't be shy to take the law into my own hands regardless)
In the updated code I posted, all images (including smilies) will first be translated to [img] tags ... then, it will look for those images that represent smilies, and translate them back.
Now now mindplay, you didn't look at it too deeply now did you?
You just described the non-default non-javascript option of that page. The default javascript one creates a javascript function where the data has every alternate character transposed and then the whole thing is escaped.
Paul.
aah, now I see - didn't notice the eval() call, I thought it just said unscape() ... well yes, this would be safe, although the output is sort of lengthy - but that's of course no problem if the email address is only displayed on the profile page.
yes, this looks safe
Yes, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's newer? Five could be more effective than six, who knows.
Two questions, actually:
A) how come there's no "show my subscribed topics" link at the bottom of the page, along with those other handy links? maybe this feature was deemed "not handy enough"?
B) why is there no option on the user's profile page to disable e-mail notifications of subscriptions?
Probably the answer to these two are the same
What I would like with these two functions, is to be able to subscribe to topics, and manually check up on the situation once in a while. I receive a LOT of e-mails about updates in subscribed topics on this board, and would like to simple disable those emails, and manually check once in a while.
What do you think about that?
great! maybe I'll get it tattooed on my forehead while I'm at it. Maybe!
I've never experienced it but I think it would confuse me
it should probably be optional, if implemented.
oh ... didn't notice. Well, the php version on porter's page does appear to be the 6-step algo, as opposed to the one I used, which appears to be the 5-step algo ... I'm not sure which one is newer though, the 5-step or the 6-step?
note - For those who need stemming algorithms in other languages, check the snowball page, which has stemmers in C++ (and some very complete stop word lists) in french, spanish, portuguese, italian, german/dutch, swedish, norwegian, danish, russian and finnish.
