They say the installation of PunBB is "hard"...

Was this the installation of 1.2 or 1.3 that they were commenting on?  I don't see how anyone could consider the installation of 1.2 hard.  You insert your database details, account, password, e-mail, etc., and you are good to go.  Every other forum and almost every other script I have used installs the same way.  The only exception is PHPnuke, which you don't want to use, anyway.  I can't comment on 1.3 because I have not used it, but I will assume that it isn't hard to install.

This is a very nice extension.  Unfortunately, I can't yet install this on my website because I think it is wise to wait for 1.3 to be officially released before I use it on a production website.

I have used both forums, and I believe that they are both great forums, but it more depends on what you want to use them for.

I tend to think that PunBB is better if you want speed, ease of administration, valid pages, and a forum that is modular (you install the common extra features you want through extensions).

MyBB is good if you want the classic forum that is the jack of all trades (you already have all of the common extra features on install) and you want to be able to have a little bit of fine tuning (I am talking about administrator functions and not necessarily features).

I am personally partial to PunBB because my webhost crams too many people on the server, and PunBB was the only forum I used that has had bearable load times on the overloaded server.
