If you use transmit, it can also create blank documents which can also be saved with any web document extension you like.
Alternatively, try BBEdit, textmate, dreamweaver, golive or any web authoring application.
Colak, you would think that TextEdit could save text as a PHP file, but the current version refuses to do this. The error messages says that it can be saved only as a .php.rtf file.
I had downloaded TextWrangler, the "lite" version of BBEdit this afternoon but thought that it could not do what was wanted. So I was reluctant to download BBEdit as well, but have just done so. I found that the "Save to FTP/SFTP Server..." command was just what was required!
Thank you! And thanks to KeyDog too. Now to see how this script works...
No it won't! Uploaded as pun_name_of_my_choice.rtf. #%&&$*()!!+## So PLEASE! How to save an RTF file as PHP on a Mac???? I've tried 6 different things and they either lead to Web pages which no longer exist or do not work!!!!!
Update: I used the control panel for my Web site to change the name of pun_name_of_my_choice.rtf to pun_name_of_my_choice.php. The change was accepted happily because now there is a PHP icon besides the name. I conclude from this that is is not possible to save a file with a .php extension using any of my Mac apps or any that I can find on the Net, but a simple name change to a text file does work.
The file is now in the directory called Forum on my Website. It's there with a heap of other PHP files and the Extensions folder. It is not inside the Extensions folder. However, even though I have logged out of my forum then in again, a refreshed a couple of times, I cannot see where to go to use pun_remove_users_with_no_posts.php. There's nothing new in my forum, not even when I refresh the User List.
What next, Colak, KeyDog and other gurus?

Yes, correct - php
tundern wrote:Can you suggest a Mac app which will save the script as a PHP file? (HTML is a possibility also with TextEdit.)
I'm afraid I can't (Google will) ...
Sigh, KeyDog! This afternoon I have tried 5 different methods to start up the PHP component of Mac OSX, mostly found by Googling--and NONE of them work!!! (In two cases, I was led to pages which no longer exist.)
And all I want to do is get rid of 32,000 spammers as quickly as possible...

3. "Go to admin, users and sort by number of posts , date registered etc." Are you suggesting that I do this after I have run one of scripts 1 or 2? If it is a separate suggestion 3, it still leaves me with 32,000 spammers with no posts to delete!
1. into the root not extension folder
2. try it and let me know if you're not given the option at the end to delete...
3. alternative... all the users with 0 posts and registered before date x can be mass deleted...
KeyDog, I have copied your "Script to remove users with signatures but no posts from PunBB 1.3.x" into an RTF file on my Mac. Should I be saving it as a PHP file first before uploading? Can you suggest a Mac app which will save the script as a PHP file? (HTML is a possibility also with TextEdit.)
KeyDog wrote:3. alternative... all the users with 0 posts and registered before date x can be mass deleted...
KeyDog, that's what I'm trying to find out--how to do a mass delete of all those users with 0 posts and registered before date x...what instructions can you give for this?
Slavok wrote:This fix is not for a certain version. This fix is for the SVN version 1.2.
You can manually fix this file.
Hey Slavok, finally upgraded from 1.2.10 to 1.3.5 after weeks of e-mail guidance from my ISP.
"You can manually fix this file" Do you think that I am a programmer like you? Hey, some of us are so dumb that we don't even know what scripting language you are using!
Thank you, Keydog, for your interest but I am still lost...

KeyDog wrote:In the admin section you can easily change the questions....
no need to do anything in the source files...
Where in the admin section? Not in the Administration Section of my forum when open in the latest Google Chrome.
Can you post a screen shot or step by step info?
Thank you.
Slovak wrote, "There are only two questions in the DB after installation, so don't forget to add more questions." Great idea Slovak, but can you please describe how to add those extra questions?
What is the name of the file with the questions? What steps to take to download, edit and upload edited file?
I was using aKismet with punBB 1.2.10 and it was easy to find the Q&A file and to edit it with a text editor. I installed the official Stop Spam from Bots extension for new 1.3.5 forum last week but that has not stopped 12-14 new registrations daily because the 2 default questions are too easy. Can't find the file with the questions in the Stop Spam from Bots directory. Will pun_stop_bots be any easier?
I have updated last week my forum from 1.2.10 to 1.3.5 and added extensions. I am particularly keen to stop 12-16 new registrations from spammers every day plus their posts so I added Antispam System. I have now installed, uninstalled and installed again. Each attempt to register myself under another user name and using a rarely used e-mail shows a broken icon where the CAPTCHA GIF should be. Why?
At least the absence of the GIF might stop all new registrations, but I do want real users to get through still.
HELP!
KeyDog wrote:Administration » Users » Searches »
look for users with less than 1 post
it gives you one long list where you can tick as you see fit... then delete with one click...
Er, how do I get to tick? No tick boxes on my 1.3.5 list...
Now that finally I have been able to update from punBB 1.2 to 1.3 (I've been on the Web for 17 years, but as a user not a programmer) I find that I have about 32,000 spammers to delete! Deleting them one by one in 1.3.5 takes 4 clicks--has anyone come up with a faster way of doing it?
Slavok wrote:Try to clear forum cache by removing all php-files from directory "<FORUM_ROOT>/cache".
Thanks, Slavok. I hope that helps someone else. Me, I've just logged onto my forum again after the host's support people had another look at it and wow! (56 days later!) I am Administrator again instead of Banned.
Don't know how it happened, just very happy that it did!
Cheers! Za vashe zdorovye'!
On a related note, I am an Administrator who got banned from my punBB forum by Akismet for some still unknown reason. The host of my Web site has removed the Akmismet plugin, so that I can participate in the forum again, but I still show up on the user list and all posts as Banned. I'm no longer on the bans list. How can I edit my Status/Title to make it show Administrator again instead of Banned?
Slavok wrote:Thanks for reporting. Fixed.
Slavok--not fixed on my version, but maybe I was expecting too much. Which version have you fixed?
And thank you, Tundern.
One reason why I am still running version 1.2.10 is that whenever I use the Check for upgrade link besides the version number, the reply says "You are running the latest version of PunBB".
Is this a bug which has been reported already and corrected in those later versions to which I did not get automatic access?
Sirena--thank you for your help. My ISP's help desk installed the modifications a couple of days ago. So far, no new registrations but I have some idea now of the changes to ask for if the bots start again.
How can we make sure that this modification is in the next version of PunBB, maybe with the ability of the administrator to change the questions and answers without going into the register.php file?
Cheers, Tundern
Dear Sirena
Thank you for the suggestion. The answer looks good. However, I'm still dumb, so dumb that I don't know how to get to my register.php file...
Have asked my ISP to help. Do you have any further advice?
Regards, Tundern
allan wrote:I feel dumb. How does one install this?
Well, I'm totally dumb. I wouldn't know where to start. So far, my BB host has been doing all of the installations for me.
I've had to suspend registrations on my punBB, because all I was getting was bots, up to ten per night.
Can your moderating tweaks be incorporated into a new release of punBB for the almost totally clueless?
