Warez is impossible to control at this point, as is distribution of MP3's, video, etc.

I feel the U.S. is lagging behind other countries in broadband speed because the RIAA, the MPAA and Microsoft are lobbying to keep things slower for the moment until they can figure out how to control things. Anybody remember DAT (Digital Audio Tape), this was a tape format that blew away the standard cassette tape, but it never saw the consumer light of day.

We have super computers at our disposal, gigabytes of disk space, CD and DVD burners and still the big corporations don't seem to have a clue what's going on. They had better get their collective acts together or else whatever revenue stream they can salvage at the present moment might not be there in a year's time.

I checked for updates in Thunderbird 1.5.04 and it updated itself to 1.5.0.5.

So TB is updating just as good as Firefox is, I'm just a happy Netizen smile

Finally the Check for Updates worked, downloaded a 500K file and voila!!

Now all I need if for Thunderbird to update.

Paul, I guess it's not fixed yet.

I've been using Beyond Compare since I can remember, makes it very easy to keep my sites updated with the latest code.

PS. If you're on Linux, check out Krusader, it's got an excellent file comparison utility.

Google builds it's own servers.

In the old days, I only purchased Compaq equipment for myself and my clients. Never had a problem, these systems were rock solid, heck I still have one machine running daily.

Today, I prefer to build my own, the quality of systems has gone downhill fast. My laptops are the only thing I buy from a name brand and I've had good luck with Gateway. I keep an eye on my local Best Buy for old inventory and I've picked up 2 laptops for a very good price.

As for a perfect computer, get yourself an AS/400 smile

Hi,

I've had the same issues, looks like PunBB isn't under the radar anymore sad

I turned off guest posting for now in 2 of my forums, I just don't have the time to deal with spam at the moment.

As for a spam solution, we can either send guest posts to a moderation queue where they have to be approved or find some solution that will not hinder legit visitors with disabilities.

Paul is working on the markup, committing his changes to SVN.
Some of us are testing SVN for validation and usability requirements.
Rickard is working offline and will start making his SVN commits as soon as Paul is done.

Just to followup, looks like there were power issues that brought down some servers. This heat wave is causing more than sweaty humans.

While perusing the Ubuntu Enlish forum, I came across this post on why Vbulletin was chosen:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=176622

I'm glad Yann picked PunBB for his forum.

By the way, I'm typing this in Ubuntu. I'm spending most of my computing day using it and I plan on going full time with it soon.

Sounds like something you buy popcorn at wink

Microsoft is a bit late to the party, if they would have taken this approach a decade ago, then things might be different today. Instead they dominated every aspect of the Windows platform and forced a lot of programmers out of the share of the pie and into the arms of Open Source.

Well, we're forgetting about the Intranet. The barrier to run your own home web server is pretty low these days. Grab an old PC and run Linux on it or use a package like XAMPP for your Windows PC.

I agree, I don't care for my data to be hosted somewhere but the technologies are freely available to run them yourself. Grab a domain name from DynDNS, run an update client and you can access your system from anywhere.

Yann,

I noticed that the main Ubuntu site and the English forums were down today, do you know what happened?

NetObjects, that's what I used to use back in the late 90's. Hell of a nice system to create your pages, that's what got me looking at dynamic sites.

I liked the way you could make a change and it replicated throughout your site, generate the html then upload the changes to your host. That thinking is why I like dynamic site tools, it's so easy for me to change a header, footer or menu sidebars and it's instantaneous.

Who owns NetObjects now?

CodeXP, let us know when it's back up, you were doing some really exciting things with PunBB.

CodeXP, why is your website down?

The forum looks good, what are you planning on using for the front end?

1. I have a Sony Vaio which has a PIII, I was dual booting Debian on it a couple of years back, it ran just fine with 256MB of memory. Today, with the new Kernel, performance should be even better, the Ubuntu Desktop CD should give you a good idea what it would be like since you can run it like a Live CD.

2. I've tried TightVNC before and it performed pretty good, it was faster than any commercial product I've ever used.

If anyone is still sitting on the fence and wondering if they should try out Linux, then the latest Ubuntu is for you.

Ubuntu 6.06 LTS is Desktop Linux done right, time to wipe out any traces of Windows wink

10 days of no popups, crashes or a gazillion windows open.

Should prove interesting, post back after the 10 days to remind us.

Trillian basic, which is free, works real good with ICQ.

Came across this yesterday while looking at a new project.

http://www.openwebware.com/products/openwysiwyg/

It loads really quick in Firefox and works rather well. It's a very small download, take out the thumbs.db from the equation and it's only 58kb, compared to other huge WYSIWYG editors that get added to small projects.

Personally, I prefer simplistic entry via bbcode or textile but just thought I'd link to this if anyone is interested.

I don't know the best but here's an extensive list:

PHP 4 is what is widely used now, then you can build up to 5.

pogenwurst, I couldn't hit the site earlier, it was on Digg I think.

I like it, could be used for a lighthearted forum or gallery site.

Tae,

Thomas moved to Textpattern, he made the post right above yours. EE core might be free but it's closed source, I don't think the licensing would allow anybody to do a PunBB to EE core bridge, they would not be allowed to release it to the general public.
