A product that does more than one thing can be the holy grail for people who actually need it to do those things, but for everyone else, it just degrades performance and bloats up the codebase.

Totally agree, the right tool for the job.

Pun is an excellent discussion forum, it does it's job rather well.

I tend to pick best of breed apps and help them work together, that's why LAMP is such a big hit and the Microsoft way is on it's way out..

My current setup PentiumPro 200mhz, 128mb ram, 4gb scsi.

Debian Woody, hosting 4 dynamic sites and 3 forums.

Any old machine will do for development.

Well after a late night coding session between myself and a fellow Nucleus developer, we have a skin to show as proof of concept.

Tested in Firefox 0.9.3, 1.0pr and IE 6 on WinXP. Fellow Mac users, let me know if there are any issues.

The PunBB cloned skin: http://hcgtv.org

hcgtv, i like a challenge ;) also would be pretty cool to have a full site in the punbb style...

Ok, I say go for it then.

If speed is an issue, then check out the latest benchmarks on CMS apps:

It doesnt matter the language, thats the beauty, be it PHP-GTK, C#, Java, Assembler, you can do it all with such a system...though the forsight to do it from the beginning is normally a must.

True, any language will do, except evil dreaded C# :)

I was thinking of XUL because mobile devices are going to start embedding Gecko as their browser. So I imagine in the future we'll be able to interact with our forums from our cell phones or mobile pdas.

This is minimo: http://linuxdevices.com/articles/AT7396996719.html

would be whickedly cool seeing as then you could create a C# app for your desktop that could directly deal with the forum server (output is alread XHTML).

C# = Evil Empire, I would do it in XUL and create an extension for Firefox.

That sounds like a lot of work, it's like if I want to take Nucleus, my CMS, and use it to create a forum with it.

My approach is to take best of breed apps and make them work better together. I already have Nucleus and PunBB working together and will add a gallery module soon.

Creating your own PunCMS means that you will have to support this new CMS for the life of it's existance, rather than just maintain the bridges between the apps.

Thanks for the link, I can use it for transferring digital images from the field.

I have gotten used to this "feature" at the forums I regularly visit, for me it's hard to live without.

I thought the same as soon as I started frequenting this PunBB forum and coming from a phpBB forum that I moderate.

I too asked Rickard for this feature but I have gotten used to it. I'll live with less features as long as the rewards are there in speed and a smaller code base.

Still OT, the only downtime for me has been electricity, moving the server or Kernel updates.

Woody is very stable, been running it for the last couple of years without a hiccup.

I haven't used Sage, but I'll give it a try.

I did try the RSS capabilties built into Firefox 1.0PR. It uses the bookmarks interface to store favorite feeds. I placed a feed folder on my bookmarks toolbar and with a click, I can see my feeds.

Couldn't you use a robots.txt file?

For those of you running 1.0pr, Arvil has released his theme called Qute.

Qute was the default Firefox theme before they switched to the current one, it's much better and has nicer icons.

It's what I'm using until Smoke is released.

Well, I imagine that community is where the forum goes. So I would grab the files in upload and put them in the root of community.

Thanks, I can't wait for Debian Sarge so I can play around with Mysql 4.

Looks like you're running Linux.

I miss Enlightenment: http://www.enlightenment.org/ one day I'll setup Linux as a workstation again.

I use the WinXP classic theme, never got used to the new theme. Classic is also a lot faster than any of the other themes I've tried.

Actually I turned off themeing and many other services: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Thanks Falconey, so you're the chrome expert that Paul is looking for :)

Update: Incompatibilties crop up using 1.0pr and this theme version. The Google search box is messed up and the bottom indicators for the RSS and alternate stylesheets aren't showing up. This is on a clean profile, so you're mileage may vary.

Well we tried, will have to wait for Aaron.

Nice mod, one suggestion: Change the color of a day if it has no posts and if you don't create a link to en empty date then your link colors would be sufficient.
