Boot Camp Turns Your Mac Into a Reliable Windows PC

For mainstream computer users doing typical tasks, Apple Computer's Macintosh models have huge advantages over the prevalent Windows computers from companies such as Dell and Hewlett-Packard. The Macs have sleeker hardware designs, a superior operating system, much better built-in software, and virtually no exposure to viruses and spyware. Apple's flagship model, the iMac, is the best consumer desktop on the market.

But, there's a big barrier for Windows users tempted to switch to the Mac: software. While there are thousands of programs for the Mac's operating system, called OS X, potential Mac buyers often find they have one or two Windows programs they must use that have no Mac equivalent. These range from custom software required by their employers, to niche programs for specific industries or hobbies, to games.

Microsoft Delays Vista Until 2007

UPDATED Microsoft revealed Tuesday afternoon what many had expected for months -- consumer availability of Windows Vista has been delayed until 2007.

While businesses would be able to get their hands on the finished product in November, consumers will not find the operating system on new machines until January. The delay also throws a wrench into the holiday marketing plans of many PC manufacturers this season.

Vista chief Jim Allchin said that the delay resulted from both quality issues, as well as requests from some of its partners. "We're trying to do the responsible thing here," Allchin told reporters in a hastily arranged teleconference.

Rumors had been circulating of a possible 2007 launch since the lackluster public appearance of the current incarnation of Vista, then Longhorn, at WinHEC 2005.

It was the opinion of many, including some notable Windows enthusiasts, that Microsoft was not making considerable progress at the time in Vista development. Some speculated that the company's holiday 2006 timeframe for launch was optimistic if Microsoft wanted to deliver a quality product.

Allchin's comments seemed to reflect those early concerns. "Product quality and a great out-of-box experience have been two of our key drivers for Windows Vista, and we are on track to deliver on both," he assured. "We must optimize for the industry, so we've decided to separate business and consumer availability."

He said the delay had to do with usability issues and ensuring Vista was up to par with Microsoft's security standards.

Allchin would not specify a date for when it would ship code to install on new PCs -- called a "release to manufacturing" -- instead pointing to the January date for consumer availability. Volume licensing customers, however, would get their hands on the code in November.

"We just needed a few more weeks," Allchin said. He said that put their partners in a "bubble" where some would be put at a disadvantage by a later release.

Microsoft's partners did not unanimously welcome the decision for a delay, Allchin admitted. Some said that Microsoft's tight holiday schedule left little room for error.

However, Microsoft says it does not expect a delay to affect PC sales during the holiday quarter. "You can ask the partners what they think," Allchin quipped.

Mozilla Offers Alpha of Firefox 2.0

March 22, 2006, 12:35 PM

Mozilla late Tuesday began the push towards Firefox 2.0 with the release of Bon Echo Alpha 1, designed to give a preview of the company's upcoming revision to its popular alternative web browser. One of the most notable new features of Firefox 2 will be its improved bookmark functionality, called Places.

Changes have also been made to tabbed browsing, support for SVG, and numerous bug fixes. While the release is not recommended for daily use, Mozilla is asking users to download, test, and provide feedback on the build. "The BonEcho Alpha 1 milestone is the first of many developer milestones on the path to Firefox 2," Mike Schroepfer, vice president of engineering for Mozilla, said in a statement.

When I hit the PunBB forums, there were 4 pages of Posts Since Last Visit. The timeout ran out before I got through all of them, so I missed some of the new posts.

Should we think about increasing the timeout from the default of 10 minutes? At least that should give people a bit more time to catch up that don't have a chance to visit the forum on a daily basis where maybe 1 or 2 pages are the norm.

Thought of this before. It is nicely implemented on Snitz forums. Take a look at this or take a look at the (live demo)

If not adopted for a standard feature, maybe it's a good start for an extension system in 1.3.

The Surprising Truth About Ugly Websites

Ugliness has never looked better. I have spent the last few days examining a surprising trend in web design that has made ugly websites look absolutely irresistible. No, its not the bolded, 18 point Times New Roman font shouting at me as I access the page that has me excited, nor is it the harsh colors that have actually managed to make my eyes hurt and distort my vision. In fact, its not even that logo which is so pixelated from being processed, resized, saved, and edited so many times that it appears to be blurred to protect the identity of the company who owns the website that has me singing the praises of ugly websites. What is it?

Ugly sells.

That's right ? ugly websites are surprisingly effective in making money. As a person who puts business before technology, a profitable website is a website is an unbelievably attractive website to me.

Street Legal Jet Powered VW Beetle

http://www.techepics.com/files/street_legal_vw_powered_1.jpg

What can you do with a GE Model T58-8F helicopter turboshaft engine, converted to jet? With Ron Patrick?s custom VW Beetle you can have lots and lots of dangerous fun exploiting all 1350 horsepower. This monster is powered by two engines (original up front, jet in back) and is perfectly street legal since you?re only using the gasoline powered engine in normal driving conditions. But if you?re feeling adventurous, fire up the jet engine - which spins up to 26,000 rpm/13,000 rpm idle - and watch the afterburner come to life. More after the jump.

I'm old enough to remember when.......

- Computer was something on T.V. From a science fiction review.
- A window was something you hated to clean.
- And Ram was the hubby or ewe.
- Meg was the name of my girl friend.
- And Gig was the band's playing site.
- An application was for employment.
- A program was a T.V. show
- A cursor used profanity
- And a keyboard was a piano!
- Memory was something you lost with age
- A c.d. was a bank account.
- And if you had a 3-l/2" floppy, you hoped nobody found out!
- Compress was something you did to the garbage -Not something you did to a file.
- And if you unzipped anything in public, you'd be in jail for a while!
- Log on was adding wood to the fire.
- Hard drive was a long trip on the road.
- A mouse pad was where a mouse lived
- And a backup happened to your commode.
- Cut you did with a pocket knife.
- Paste you did with glue.
- A web referred to a spider's home
- And a virus was the flu.

I guess I'll stick to my pad and paper and the memory in my head. Nobody's been killed in a computer crash, but they always wish they were dead!

Sweden prepares for oil-free future

SWEDEN is to take the biggest energy step of any advanced Western economy by trying to wean itself off oil within 15 years ? without building new nuclear power stations.

The attempt by the country of 9 million to become the world's first practically oil-free economy is being planned by a committee of industrialists, farmers, car makers and others.

The Swedish Government said on Tuesday that it intended to replace all fossil fuels with biofuels (such as ethanol) and renewables (such as wind and wave power) before climate change destroys economies and oil scarcity leads to bigger price rises.

"Our dependency on oil should be broken by 2020," said Sustainable Development Minister Mona Sahlin. "(This) would give us enormous advantages, not least by reducing the impact from fluctuations in oil prices."

A Government official said: "We want to be both mentally and technically prepared for a world without oil."

Sweden, which was badly hit by the oil price rises in the 1970s, now gets almost all its electricity from nuclear and hydro-electric power, and relies on fossil fuels mainly for transport. A 1980 referendum decided that nuclear power should be phased out, but this has still not been finalised.

The decision to abandon oil puts the country at the top of the world green league table.

Last week, President George Bush surprised analysts by saying that America was addicted to oil. The US plans to increase nuclear power.
