I don't think I have any tables left for layout now, but there's still a lot of layout tweaking I need to complete.

Integrate the forum into what? The whole front page of the site is driven by Rickards News Plugin.

The gallery and the hotbox... now that's integration smile

Plus would it not make more sense to have left it on and then ask Rickard if any problem with removing and putting it somewhere else.

But thats just my opnion.

Sure. I probably should have asked him before I started hacking it to pieces too. The site followed the letter of the law.

Your opinion is valid, and I've added the PunBB link to the site footer (it was always on the colophon page, which can be reached from any page on the site by clicking the word "Imagination" in the footer). It now follows the spirit of the law as well.

Thanks for your insightful comments on the site.

You could have left the copyright to Rickard though......

There's a whole page devoted to Rickard and PunBB on the site, so I don't think it's an issue of "respect". If he'd rather I put the Punbb copyright back, I'll most certainly do so.

Nice job. Looks great in Opera. Totally buggered in IE though.

Yeah, I knew that. Since more than 75% of the members of my site use Safari, IE6 is a low priority for me right now. I'll hack away at the stylesheet now and make it right.

After ages and ages, I've finally launched my site:

It's a crazily customized punbb install. Let me know what you think!

I don't know, how do we get out the box?

By really thinking about what a forum is supposed to do, no just about how it's been done till now. Look at punbb, it was a fresh look at an "already solved" problem, and it's fantastic.

Maybe we need to look at the way people use forums, and what forums are supposed to do, and then find a better way of doing it.

This is awesome work.

Please don't take this as a criticism, because I have nothing but respect for the work you've done here, but that said...

How come all forums look the same? Why are we all stuck in the same box?

The current incarnation of my site is typical blah forum. The punbb version under development is something altogether different. Rickard, Paul, if you want to see something a little different, email me. I appreciate the work that goes into something like this, and want to share back what I've gained, but it's not ready for public consumption yet.

Maybe something like this. It's a little limited atm, but it does avoid any punbb modding.

That's very interesting. How's it working?

Bear with me here for a second, as I try to explain what is going through my head.

Could we not create some sort of mod that would allow users to upload images? I know there's an attachment mod, but that's not what I'm thinking of.

What I am thinking of is having a special category that is only for the gallery, and any forum beneath that category would, in effect, be a gallery category.

The gallery category need not appear on the forum view page. Perhaps another page could be made that  organizes the category/forum structure visually, in a more "traditional" gallery way. Or maybe we could create something like extern.php which would allow us to integrate the gallery content with the rest of our sites.

Users could post images, along with pertinent information and image category through a gallery post form, instead of the normal post form. It would handle all the mime-type checking, image size and file size/file-type checking.

Back on the view side, whether it's a normal forum displayed differently, or a different page altogether, clicking on the thumbnail would give us a thread-view page with the large version of the image at the top. It would work like our normal thread- view does now. Users could comment on the images, the comments would be in the familiar thread-view format, and comments would could toward the users post count.

Then we'd have all the pubb permissions in place, the the moderation and the administration capability, and very tight integration.

Just a thought. Any comments/ideas on this? I wasn't sure if I should post it here, or start a new thread.  My apologies if the thoughts behind this post are not very well organized!

I settled on the singapore gallery: http://nupusi.org

I've looked at singapore, which is a nice, lightweight system, but I am left with a few questions:

- Does it support multiple users?
- How secure is it?

Coppermine integrates alright, but it is insanely difficult to do any heavy modding to it because of the way it was built. Its HTML output is a disaster, it has way too many features, the integration is....less than desirable, and the 1.4 version, which seems to be much better, is coming "someday" and I am not sure I can wait that long for a major component of my community site.

I've been looking for the "right" alternative. Punbb was the perfect replacement for the overweight, buggy phpbb. We need a punGallery, or something built with the same philosophy.

I just don't have the coding skills to build one.

Two bugs I've noticed so far in the lovely 1.2:

In Camino 0.7 (Mac, obviously), the login/password text inputs on the login screen do not appear.

Attempts to change usernames to capitalize the initial letter (Username, as opposed to username) seem ineffective. Additionally, registering with a username that includes an initial capital letter results in an all-lowercase username.

[edit] Nevermind the username case issue. It only seems to apply to the initial Administrator account. Other accounts are unaffected. I shall endeavor to do more research before posting bug reports like this.[/edit]

Thanks, Rickard, for the fantastic forum software. PunBB is a pleasure to work with.

Indeed. the current site is a phpbb installation.

The punbb version is a LOT different than what you're looking at there. Much lighter, much more open, much more structured and readable.

Because of heavy integration with a CMS and Coppermine, the beta site is password protected and not currently available to show. I'm sorry.

If you want to be really slick you put the summaries inside an absolutely position span inside the forum name <a> tags. Set it to display none for A:link, A:visited and display:inline or display:block for a:hover. Instant popup with no javascript.

I gave it some thought, and that would indeed be cool, except  that I am not generally a fan of "tool-tip" type functionality except as it applies to the title tag.

I'm pretty versed in xhtml/css, I work full time as a web developer. I'm looking forward to punbb 1.2. I've managed to make most of 1.1.5 xhtml/css and more or less semantically correct, but it's a little clumsy.

I'm curious where you would fit in this summary on the index page.

My forum is not layed out the way most are. As I said, it's a VERY modified punBB installation. On the Forum Index, each forum summary takes the full width (450px, it's a fixed-width design). it looks something like this (forgive the formatting, BBCode is only so flexible):

Forum Title 384 posts in 86 threads

Now, what i'm hoping to do is replace that "last post" part with a summary of the two most recent posts in that forum:

Forum Title 384 posts in 86 threads

Are we talking about a major performance hit, or a 'punBB-level' performance hit. Because this board is already blistering compared to phpbb. I am curious if one more query per forum (10) is going to hurt the index that badly.

Thanks for the quick response though. Love the software. I'll be sure to link to it in the appropriate place when I have something.

I know it's rather an odd request, but I've been modifying (heavily!) a 1.1.5 punBB installation to replace the crufty phpbb installation my community site is currently operating on. While I am aware that I am in for serious headaches when punBB 1.2 comes out (oh my, even more code joy!) it is important for me to do what I'm doing right now. I would link to the site, but it's in something of an beta state at this time and not fit for human consumption.

And now, after that short digression, I would like th ask the question I registered for. Is there any easy way to display on the main forum index a summary of the last two posts in each forum?

While I am comfortable digging around in PHP, this particular task is eluding me. In extern.php there is a way to do something similar for pages outside the forum, but I cannot figure out how to make this happen on the forum index page.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
