Topic: Problem quoting text with Firefox

One of my users has a rather odd problem. Her first report of problems was as follows:

Last night and tonight I've noticed a slightly peculiar and rather annoying problem with these boards (which problem I did not have previously, and cannot account for with regard to my own computer set-up, as I haven't made any changes to it recently that I can think of).

I can post quite happily as a "new" post, but when I try to reply to a specific post, using the "Quote" button, it doesn't work.  I get the box with the quoted text up, all right, and I type my reply, but when I hit "Submit", it just sits there failing to load the new page.  But if I remove the quoted text and paraphrase what the other person said, it works.

(If it helps, I'm using a Dell Latitude laptop with a Pentium III processor, Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 and Mozilla Firefox 1.0.4.)

My first reaction was "upgrade Firefox", since 1.0.4 had security-related bugs, if for no other reason. However, she did that, and still has the same problem:

Okay, I have upgraded and tried to post this using the "Quote" button.

It didn't work.  It displayed exactly the same behaviour as before - the little box where it shows the progress of the page loading remained obstinately blank.  Neither opening a new tab nor closing and restarting Firefox had any effect.

(Incidentally, it's not - or not only - the quote tags; removing those and enclosing the quoted text in inverted commas was another thing I tried and found to not work.)

Does anybody have any idea what the problem could be? I use Firefox 1.0.7 on Ubuntu at home, and I used to use Firefox 1.5 on WinXP at work (until my boss told me to remove it) and now I use IE 6. I've never seen this problem, and don't really know where to start.

Any ideas will be gratefully received.

Russ

1) Do you or anyone besides her have any trouble quoting?

2) Can I have a link to your board?

3) Did she clear her cache and remove all of your board's cookies and start fresh?

Re: Problem quoting text with Firefox

Since she has Windows XP installed she also has IE6. Strange she didn't mention whether this was also a problem with IE (though I suspect it will be). Maybe worth asking her.

Re: Problem quoting text with Firefox

In response to Bassguy's questions:

1. I've had no problems, and no-one else has complained
2. Not really - it's a private forum, and only members are allowed to view/post, membership is limited to specific people. Sorry, I know this sounds like I'm being a jobsworth, but we have our reasons hmm
3. As far as I know, she hasn't tried that. I'll tell her to try it

Paul:

I don't think she's tried IE, but I've asked her to try it in IE

Thanks for the help, guys.

Re: Problem quoting text with Firefox

The problem is now fixed, so, to help anyone else that finds this thread while looking for a solution to a similar problem:

It worked fine in Internet Explorer
Clearing Firefox's cache fixed the problem. She didn't get as far as clearing cookies.

Many thanks to Bassguy & Paul for the help.
