Topic: Two Column Layout

Hey, what do you think of the two column layout?

I had to combine the last post and moderator columns with the forum column so it wouldn't be too squashy.

Do you think it's too cluttered?

Re: Two Column Layout

Well, it's different :) The problem I think isn't that it's too cluttered, but that you have too many forums.

Re: Two Column Layout

Just my 2 cents.

Left hand forum list: Remove the in from last post so the forum list shortens.
Right hand forum: Move to the bottom.
Active topics: Move it up to the right side. Remove some fields, maybe leave topic, forum and last post.

Try too get it where the left hand forums are equal to the right hand active topics.

Just my 2 cents :)

Re: Two Column Layout

Thanks Rickard, now that I look at it, I think so too... I might try combining some of the left hand forums.

hcgtv that sounds like alexkingorg's forums... i think if I make them in one column, the page would be too long to scroll down...

Hey Rickard, how about sub-forums?  Then I could have one manufacturer specific forum, and all the different manufacturers as sub-forums?

Re: Two Column Layout

Just my opinion but is having to scroll down any more of an effort than having to go through one extra layer of navigation for subforums. If somebody really has a huge list of categories or forums then wouldn't the best solution be to put a copy of the jump menu at the top of the forum so people could go straigt to the forum they wanted. Obviously some back to top links would also come in handy.

Re: Two Column Layout

Not knocking punBB, but I was looking at http://www.christianforums.com/ which uses vBulletin, and the subforums they've got looks ok, and doesn't clutter up the screen... (well the all the other sidebar junk does, but i'm just talking about the forums bit)

Re: Two Column Layout

ok, i've played with the layout a bit more...

Gone back to the single column layout, but also made my manufacturer specific forums look like vBulletin sub-forums.

Re: Two Column Layout

One Sugestion, reduce the size of the active forums. Maybe just the topic name would be sufficent enough. Also, the point of the active forums to eaisly navigate to the topic. Currently, thats not possible when it is way down at the bottom of the page.

Do, or do not.

Yes, that's much better.
