Hi all ...

Wondering if anyone out there has played around with the notion of integrating pMachine with punBB [integration].

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Hi all,

I've been beating my head against the wall trying to sort out an issue I have with my current style sheet, and making it backwards compatible with Internet Explorer 5.1 on the Macintosh.  This for both Mac OS 9 and OSX.

What occurs is the style sheet "collapes" [for the lack of a better term].  Everything imploads, and get's jumbled to the lefthand side of the browser space.  What is weird, is the fact this does not happen all the time, only sporatically.

a) All other browsers work fine. [ie: Safari, FireFox, Mozilla, etc]
b) Heavy use of php includes.
c) makes use of a header, righthand nav, subfooter and footer include, both assigned properly in the style sheet.

Due to the nature and content of our website, we are forced to support Internet Explorer, so this is a must.  Please don't ask 'why' we support IE, or what your general impression of IE is - what I need is to get it fixed and move forward, rather than telling me how much IE sucks - we all know that already.  smile

--- I would like to pay someone to fix this for me.  Any reasonable person with the skill level in CSS should probably know right off what is causing this.

--- If you're genuinely interested in making a few bucks and will hang in there and fix this problem, please contact me through this forum.

--- I will be happy to provide more details off-forum rather than listing more here.  We can either chat, or correspond through email.

Thanks in Advance!

Just a few quick words ...

I guess I should consider myself lucky.  My ISP seemed to think I was lazy, or just plain stoopid.

I went *years* without a single hack attempt on our server.  In the span of one month, we got hacked by the same $%^%$#@!! kiddie licker 4 times.  I wound up getting a good friend of mine to help me update our forums, due to problems I had of my own trying to update it.  Thanks to him, I should be ok now. :>)

In a word, I cannot *wait* to get away from phpbb.  When we update our website, it will be with a shiney new version of PunBB.

Kudos Rickard and Paul.

Hey Gizzmo,

Do some research on some good Code Generators.  I have tried many, but Codemaker 0.4 and CodeGenie come to mind.  I use them all the time to build up utilitarian apps all the time that I use for our website.  Codemaker is nice because it separates the codebase from the design, and builds the style sheets for you, as well as the code.

FYI; what most of these Generators do is pull data from an existing database.  So, in this case, your schema already needs to be built in advance.  In addition to what Frank as already mentioned, take care in how you want your sql schemas to be set up and work.  While sitting down and sorting out exactly what you want your app to do, understanding and getting your schema right is just as important as the design itself.

Codemaker is pretty cool.  You point it to the database you want to build your app from, and then fill in the blanks, telling it what kind of fields you want each table to be.  When you hit the generate button, wha'la! - Instant app, and it places all this in a "out" directory for you.  Again, it won't build a high powered app for you, but at least would get you started, even if buidling up smaller chunks of your app, and then put them all together as one.

Just a thought.  :>)

ahhhhh ...man!!   U BAD!!

hmmmm ....I guess I need to dig out all my old BILLY BOX jokes.  smile

Raybo: I edited my earlier post. Did you try the fix?

Hey Paul,

yes, this did the trick!  thanks!

I also email you directly.  Please let me know if that is a good address to correspond.  I sent you two, both addressing two completely different issues.

Thanks so much

Hey Paul,

Sure, come up with just a slightly different size upwards, and send that to me.  I'll be happy to test and send you some feedback moshskosh.

I understand and recognize the different approaches you're faced with when desigining a style sheet [for that matter, any style sheet].  I just felt that leaving out Mac's in general would be a terrible thing to do.  [does that sound like a commercial or what?? :>))]

Thanks!

Hi Folks,

Great Job Rickard!  Also, I need to shower praises on Paul too.  :>)

My install went without a hitch, however if I had something to fuss about for an early beta release, I would say the text is too small for my old eyes to read it.  Actually, it's really *too* small to really see anything.

Internet Exploder 5.1 on Mac OS 9

The same is not so bad for IE on OSX.  Text is somewhat larger.  Under Firefox, the text size looks ok.

[Note: For those of you who are using OSX, please don't tell me to 'update'.  I already have three machines running OSX now.  :>)]

On the other hand, I do feel this should be remedied in subsequent updates to PunBb, only because there will be a lot of folks who are still running OS 9 - and therefore using IE 5.1 as their browser.  I would be willing to give up encreased point size in subsequent browers to accommodate this.

I recognize users could simply change the point size after they install, however this is a large departure from earlier versions of PunBB, so in that case this would be hard to sell new users.

Otherwise, I am tickled to death.  This is *very* kewl - not overlooking all the other details, the new plugin feature is worth the price of admission. :>)

Just my two cents worth.  :>)  Kudos!!

I *really* like this, and it's a long time coming for BBS's/Forums in general - in fact, I think I may had brought up 'plugins' as an idea earlier on. Regardless who thunk it up, I am very happy to see this!  Kudos!!

Very Groovy!!  :>)

I had hesitated before, but since everyone is jumping in, I guess I better too. <smiles>

* I'm running MacOS9 on a G4 Dual 550 mhz - Actually, this is my main production machine!
If it's been written for OS9, chances are it's been installed, is running, or is archived.  :>)

* OSX Panther 10.3 on a 1.2 gighz machine. [which incidentally runs 10.4 Tiger on a separate partition :>)].

I have installed everything you can think of on this box.  I do all my music on this machine, as well as have all the "Complete" series of installers [ie: Complete Apache, Complete PHP, Complete mySQL].  When I need to run/test something on my local box that requires php programming, I use this box.

I can boot directly into Tiger, and use all the kewl stuff that Tiger provides [which in my case is writing Automator Actions]

Tiger?  How do you say 'whooohoo!!'?? :>)

* A little iMac we use for our billing and invoicing running OSX 10.3 Panther.  Also, we have prescribed this box for all of our photo library for my wife and I.

* A g3 iBook, running Panther, that I bought for my wife.  We love this thing - and often take it with us on trips. [watch DVD's. php development, etc, etc].

I just sold a Dual 450 to a Printing Firm - i set it up expressly for doing desktop/prepress.

With my background coming from the prepress world, I have used both Macs and Billy Boxes.  In those cases where we ran software RIPs, much of the time we used PC's with only the installation for the RIP itself and nothing else.  The reasoning behind this is only because we could rape stores for cheap IBM machines and run Win2000 or XP.  Obviously, we never bothered using a Billy Box for desktop/design/prepress work.

well, all through elemtrey school, i was "forced" to use Macs.

That could be a good reason.  Chances are, the Mac's at school weren't very great Macs to begin with, aside from the fact they choke them down - preventing students to do much. [other than protocol]

Gary13579 wrote:

Of cource, at school, you cant really do anything on them. every other computer ive ever had has been a PC. i have one Macintosh, and its sitting under my PC, because it doesnt work.

Really? What model Mac?

Gary13579 wrote:

i guess the main reason is i have no clue how to do anything on it, while i know quite a bit on PCs.

Ahh ... there ya go!  The Macintosh OS is very easy to understand and use.  Don't discount, or take one's word at "not enough software is available for Macs" - which is pure hogwash and garbage.  There are tons of *very* kewl software apps available for the Mac; and that was when Macs were running OS 9.  Today, the latest OS is OSX.

OSX is a totally different animal, based on a Unix foundation running the Mack Kernal.  There has been much discussion about the Development Tools that come with the Mac [or when you purchase the OS software separately or buy a Mac].  I won't go into what is good or bad about software updates, etc, only to say Xcode Rocks.  Applescript Studio allows you to build complete apps using Xcode, repleat with fabulous GUI's and it's free.  Windows can't even come close to this, at least not currently.

In summation, please don't discount Mac's based on your 'school' experience.  Find a good bud who uses a Mac and he/she will not only show you how it's a killer OS/machine - but why.  :>)

Gary13579 wrote:

well, thanks for bumping a almost 2 month old topic, but i somewhat agree with you. MS sucks, but i dont really like Mac.

I couldn't help but wonder ... why is it you don't like Macs?

I'm not trying to start any flame wars, just curious.  :>)

Just my two cents, but I feel that guest should *never* be allowed to send email unless they register.

Personally, I *really* like the internal email system punbb provides, and if left up to me, I would hide/mask all the other options in my install so the only way to send email is through the system, thus, not exposing any email addresses at all, unless of course the user sends email, which then would expose it.  I recognize there may be problems for some folks to do it this way, but to me that would 'fix' the spam harvesting issues altogether.

In regard to the spam harvestors and profiles - what they are doing is grabing the profile page, linking to that, then using it to spam back so they can harvest.  The way around this is to place a robots.txt file in the root where pun is, so the robots can't index it.

Just FYI, updates to existing OS's are free from Apple, however just like Microsoft, Apple charges for a full version release [ie: Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, etc].

With respect to free development stuff for Windows, I did not know this, so that is good news.  I don't wish to start any platform wars either.  :>)

I guess my premise was that so many folks just don't 'get' Mac's in general, and therefore have a biased opinion - much of the time without even having sit in front of a Mac, let alone use one.

There are some great things you can do with Windows, and the same certainly applies to Macs.  Coming from the desktop/prepress industry, and using both systems, I would have to say I would prefer a Mac over Windows hands down.  Much, of course depends on what you're used to, and what you're doing [ie: development, php, web, graphics, etc].

hehe ...I thot that would wring a reply.  :>)

In taste, I did suface with "Everything Free for a Nominal Fee" <wink>

In all seriousness ... if you included the price of any system, plus the OS, plus other development tools of the same caliber, you would spend a lot of $$ to accomplish the same.  Xcode just rocks.  You can even use Applescript to build complete apps too.

remember me Rickard?

oh, yeah,....... Ray who?  :>)

<as he screams by in his Ferrari>

btw #2: Did I say Apple has the best development tools around?

Not only that, they are FREE - they come with each Mac you purchase, or software update you purchase.

I know, I know, everything is free for a nominal fee ... but when you consider Apple throwing in the dev tools for free ... that is worth something these days when you consider serious programming.
