Re: [idea] - Community Spam Removal (9 replies, posted in PunBB 1.2 modifications, plugins and integrations)
it is a bit extreme but we could fudge with the numbers a bit to suit.
i currently use a real effective mod for my vB board i run that, in my opinion, has stopped spam in it's tracks*. simple, users with X amount of posts or less can't post links. they get an error page when their post has links in it. spam bots are dumb(most of them are anyway) and usually can't get passed that. plus spam bots, in my experience, are hit and runners. they only post 1 post and never come back so that user wouldn't be around long enough to make the X posts to get over that hurdle and then be able to post links in their posts.
spam is a real problem i'll admit, but it isn't impossible to eliminate.

the the preview hover on threads with bbcode in them show the raw bbcode and not the parsed output in firefox 2.0.01. other than that it's very nice.

Topic: tips for a new Ubuntu/*nix user? (5 replies, posted in General discussion)
i've got Ubuntu 6.10(current?) sitting on my desk waiting for a donor machine right now. i've tried it out via the live cd and i can't wait. the only thing keeping me from just converting my current machine to it now(yes i know i can dual boot) is this is the family machine and teaching them all to use Ubuntu would prove quite difficult(not very tech savvy they are ) anyways.. why didn't i do this earlier? i'm in "love" with it's simplicity, speed(even from the live cd), accessibility, style, feel and most of all it's security. why isn't this a staple for ANY prefab box?
what i would like to know are some of the resources to learn how to use it to it's full potential. it will be MY everyday box for everything from development to browsing. my gaming will have to stay on the windows machine for obvious reasons. is php/mysql/apache installed right off the cd at time of OS installation? what is it's default "notepad" app? can i change it to say notepad2 or ++? also someday soon i'd like to build a box for the families entertainment streaming ala windows media center(music, movies, etc.) so tips on this would be appreciated.
in short i want to know as much as i can before i dive in. thanks in advance for any info.

if you go to this page and click one of the band members then hit you back button in your browser there is a dotted line surrounding that member's linked image. how do i get rid of that dotted line? i'll post the page's code if need be.
edit: how do i get rid of that dotted line all together?
thanks in advance for the help.

no i mean in a magazine i subscribe to. actually it's MaximumPC not a gaming mag. they have a 10-12 page ad in most every month. get's annoying. i'm actually kinda half kidding really. i've researched them and they seem to be one of the more reliable hosts.

i will never buy from 1and1... they clutter my gaming magazines with 10 page ads.

Re: Good hosting? (35 replies, posted in General discussion)
something that noone has mentioned most reliable hosts have is a forum. if they give the option for their customers and potential customers to give feedback then that should say something about them as a company as a whole. they aren't trying to hide behind a support desk or email address.
just my opinion really.

you know, if only there was a "cafe press" version where Rickard/dev team/PunBB could get some small portion of the sales of each stick. hell, i've been toying with the idea of getting a thumb drive, this would tip me over to finally purchasing one.

actually i have my own hosting company.... DR Jeckyl got two accounts with me.. and several other rc and car clubs also.. there not bad and cheap for a reseller account.. there on a share cluster system. so if a system dies u never lose ur stuff... but i only host for a few friends and my personal 1000 sites..lol.
