i think what Smartys meant is that the only way this will happen is if you mod punbb to accept the mailing list posts. as far as it being done already, i personally haven't seen it done but that doesn't mean it hasn't been done.
is it possible to accomplish this via a mod?
most likely yes. someone with more coding knowledge than i will have to answer you for certain tho.
i find it interesting that they (phpbb and nuke) both blamed it on "3rd party" programs before they even knew for certain what has happened. i read that some net hosts are pulling and/or forcing their customers not to use the latest version of phpbb until this is resolved. interesting none-the-less.
@z0rglub: have you submitted your gallery to opensourcecms.com? if not you should.

in your opinion. so far out of the ones i have tried out Limbo (www.limbo-cms.com) XOOPS (www.xoops.org) and e107 (www.e107.org) are tied for first with PHPWebsite (opensourcecms demo) coming in a close second.
i ask this because i would like to see some differant CMSs and YOUR opinions of them. i look forward to what you all have to say.

i'm sorry if this has been covered, but can it be coded to only allow images no bigger than say 800px(maybe an admin option here) wide and if it goes past that to link them automaticly?

another thing is it could be for a "refered here by:" field to keep track of how your members heard of your board. maybe. *shrug*
let's be optimistic now. i'm sure we all thought that it(punbb.org) wouldn't jump to #2 as fast as it did now did we? but i agree, competing with w3 will be tough.

yes a very cool idea...
there was/is a style guide for ealier versions of punbb. it was to help poeple make there own styles and better customize the look and feel.
