Sure thing Neal, just because you said please.

I think its pretty obvious this is not our plan, but anyway, do you really think something should prevent us?

No, not at all, you have every right to take GPL code and do what you desire with it.

Like I do.

Right, there in lies the quandary.

Release, and you're at the same state as FluxBB. You want to be a dev but alas, we have users now. These pesky people, they ask the same damn questions, god don't they read tfm. Then, it's not fun anymore.

Not really. It's a two choice decision. If you go to another project, you are faced with those same two choices. Your third scenario is merely a placement shift. smile

Ok, let's go with maintain your own release.

Does that not go against the Open Source grain? The idea is for us all to work together to make better software that nobody can own but we can all share. If I maintain my own release, then I benefit nobody by myself.

You can start chanting Kum Ba Yah now smile

The fact they choose to go their own way knowing that in practice they could still end up providing PunBB with all the code for nothing should tell you something.

Paul,

How many of you on the original coding team raised their hand and said, "Hell no, we won't sell"?

Hi,

This forum feels very slow at times, which is not good from a marketing aspect.

Is GoDaddy the best hosting provider for these domains?

Took a while for that thought to hit you didn't it?

Giddiness took over me, guilty.

NiCk

But it is not popular wink

Let me take a stab at answering this, having been around Open Source projects for a time.

Open Source projects are the predecessors of social communities. MySpace has it's roots in what we do here, read someone's posting, leave a reply and over time, make acquaintances and alliances along the way. Before there was PunBB, we used mailing lists and newsgroups on Usenet, but now we hang out in browser based messaging systems.

How a project becomes popular has some parts code, some parts community. Code is important, no doubt, without it, I wouldn't be typing this message. Community is important, without me, you wouldn't be reading this. PunBB's code is fast and secure, a winning combination that is used by many software projects for their own support forums. What PunBB lacks is the community to take it places.

Joomla!, in less than 3 years, has created one of the most vibrant online communities. It's an amazement to watch the exuberant users man the support forums, leaving the programmers free to code some more. Every project should learn from Joomla!, they used the power of community to fork and surpass Mambo.

Sign on as a regular user, you shouldn't see the email address in another user's profile.

Then it hit me today, what prevents you guys from selling FluxBB to the next bidder?

We suppose that such cooperation will let us create a unique synergy, in which the project?s key core components and a set of extensions will be developed simultaneously by both the open-source community and the professional team of our company.

Anatoly,

Are you at liberty to tell us what extensions your professional team is working on?

???????.

Alcoholic bread, very interesting. I got in Yuengling a couple of years back, mostly cause it's a low cost beer that actually has a decent taste. I drink to my health, at least that's what I say to my wife wink

The strong opinion of company leaders is that our position is much more honest in relation to PunBB users, than well-known pseudo-independent ?.org? foundations, who actively promote internet-giants in their ?free, open-source and noncommercial? products.

Hi Anatoly,

Open Source is about openness, conveying to the community your goals, aspirations and day to day happenings. PunBB has a blog, which could have been used to convey SoftDeluxe's honest intentions from the start. This switching of domains should of been discussed here on this forum, gotten the user's opinions long beforehand. Keep in mind that PunBB is nothing without the community, the code has no value without it's dedicated users.

The reason I got involved with PunBB four years back was that Rickard was open and honest with us. He returned our emails, he was a person you could touch and feel. I don't feel you Anatoly, I don't know who you are, what your intentions are or if you prefer beer over wine. There in lies the problem, why I've stayed away from this forum for so long, lack of communication.

Yes, I was a former developer, but I'm still a user.

You need to have a Textpattern account to see it wink

That's for keeping the riff-raff out smile

Edit: Basically the TxP folk would like a way to to search a thread. There are threads supporting a plugin that could go on for pages and pages, finding a tidbit of info in all those pages could be daunting. phpBB3 has it working, you can play with it at area51.

SMF - cause of it's licensing - is about to get run over by a truck:

CMS Software Integration: Joomla! Third Party Bridge with Joomla! auth plug-in

eramus wrote:

does it still need to read?
Copyright (C) 2002-2005  Rickard Andersson (rickard@punbb.org)

No, you can leave that off, PunBB 1.3 doesn't have it at all. Actually it was something I always removed from any PunBB install, cause it was confusing and also it could get Rickard in trouble if the software is used for something less desirable, like a porn site.

Hey, I'm just up the road from you, I'm in Charlotte. Glad to hear this isn't a joke, so definitely let's do lunch, Cracker Barrel?

eramus,

You just blew the Russians out of the water!

Seriously, if this isn't a joke, I'm very interested - let's do lunch smile

bingiman wrote:

Does this mean that no core files will ever need to be edited? If that's the case, then that would be awesome!

Yes, that's the idea of extensions, no need to touch core code.

Plugins, extensions or whatever you want to call it have been around CMS and Blogs for some time now. I can pop a plugin into Textpattern to add extra functionality, said plugin still works on subsequent updates to the core, no need to futz with diff files, etc.

Now what you've done with Mega Pun is to make sure that all these mods behave together, thus making it a testing stage for plugins. I have it running in XAMPP, to see what mods I like.

There are also spammers in PunBB.

Well, somebody is letting a forum post hang out there for no reason other than to let the freaking perl script keep adding to said thread. This isn't spam, it's masochism!

phpBB3 is much improved but if I wanted more bells and whistles than PunBB, I would use SMF.

No matter how good phpBB3 is, it's still going to be a target for spammers and script kiddies. If you want to see what I mean, throw up a phpBB forum on your web server and watch the logs, mucho fun.
