shirish,

I'll be putting up more screens as changes to the backend are done.

You can search on hcgtv, which is my member name.

Googling around for an answer and I come across this board:

Hey, you got your local server going, that's good news.

Hi,

When PunBB 1.3 is released, making it look like your front end system will be a lot easier with Paul's changes to the underlying CSS and templates.

Glad you decided on Textpattern, the synergy of TxP and Pun will one day arrive wink

Hey, nicely done.

You could always shift the focus of the site to PunBB related how-tos on styling, mods and tweaks to build your own Guild site. Just a thought?

Ooh, an iPun wink

Looks good, did you develop the theme yourself?

The myth that is PunBB 1.3...

Jokingly referred to as the Sombrero release.

Here's a tip of the hat to the developers, more to follow...

That said, HCG i like the idea of Akismet but hate how i have 0 control over it which is why i have not used it.

Depends on the forum I guess. For a high volume forum, Akismet works well, it keeps you from having to approve many posts when a moderation queue makes it's way into PunBB. As far as control, you can go through what is marked as spam and mark it as Not Spam. I'm so used to spam controls in Thunderbird that I find Akismet to be a natural extension to my daily routine.

Let me just add: This past week I was working on some mockup Rules for my local test PunBB 1.3 forum. I liked the wording on the Rules and decided to add them to my live forums, they had never had any Rules before. Well, to my shock, the normal 15+ signups a day, went down to a few and then nothing. Looks like the configured bots got thrown off by an extra screen in the signup process.

Emancipator, I've been using the Akismet mod and it's working great.

Hi Jim,

Played around with it a bit, seems to work fine in Firefox 2 on WinXP.

Are you going to release this as a free mod?

Hi, check the dev site, particularly the SVN timeline: http://dev.punbb.org/

We have the same kind of talk on the Debian forums, everybody wonders when Etch will become stable.

I run Etch on my home server but I still run Sarge on the VPS that hosts my live web sites. I'm in no particular hurry to see Etch come out cause I want it to be solid and stable. I don't think any developer group holds back software if there wasn't a good reason for a delay.

I run PunBB 1.3 on my home server, I can see many exciting things in it but I also see some exciting things coming. Etch is frozen, as in no new features are being added, PunBB is still being added to, there's a list of tickets that reads like a Christmas list.

Soon, the Elfs will be done with their work, in due time smile

I just wanted to add that the rewriting scheme in SVN is very adept.

It let's you change schemes well after the board has been spidered or you start using links to other posts within the board itself. As long as the .htaccess remains in the root, you can go from one scheme to another and you won't get 404's, even the messy url's will still work.

I was very impressed, I wish other systems were as bullet proof.

Just came across this: http://forum.webfaction.com/

so I'd have to say that adding the topic title (while not always a good benchmark for content) does do something for you.

That may be one factor, I've also gone from /item/123 to /home/whats-up-dude type of urls.

But I truly believe it's the title of your story that really sets it apart more than the url.

If you want money for GPL code, the ransoms are quite a good answer (if you want something back for your time, not make a living out of it).

I agree, that's the best way to go about doing it. You get your money, the community gets a new extension, we're all happy smile

I like the satirical look at the hype brought on by Jobs.

Prince was awesome, when he sang Purple Rain in the falling rain, it was sort of fitting in an eerie sort of way.

Glad that PunBB held up, lean is mean wink

Raybo wrote:

Does TextPattern offer multiple, or customizable form fields for entries? {ie: over your basic, title, blurb, body, more, etc}

Out of the box, Textpattern has 10 custom fields you can use per article. I believe there is a plugin to give you more than 10, if you need them.

As for Textpattern, I find it to be in the same lean and mean spirit as PunBB. I'm running 7 Textpattern driven sites on my VPS (384mb) and they all respond very nicely, even when the traffic spikes. The templating system is very natural to understand if you're familiar with XHTML and there are plenty of template tags to do just about anything.

Textpattern is as lean a solution as static html files, and it renders almost as fast.

Other forum solutions include this feature.

phpBB doesn't, cause we went through the same feature request on the Debian forum I hang out at.

It's in /include/common.php:

// Enable DEBUG mode by removing // from the following line
define('PUN_DEBUG', 1);

Have a look at the Multi-Lingual Publishing Pack for Textpattern.

Hey, chin up smile

I've done it many times, had to re-tool for a new generation of silicone. It gets easier over time, because you don't become an expert at any one thing, you skim the surface so to speak. Learn enough to get by, to do your job, but don't sink too deep or else, you're digging yourself out again.
